NORTH CHURCH OF PAUL REVERE FAME #1529 BOSTON -- The oldest church in this city, Christ Protestant Episcopal Church is one of the historical landmarks of the United States; for it was here, on April 19, 1775, from its tall steeple, that the signal lantern told Paul Revere of the march of the British troops to Lexington and Concord. The famous phrase, “One if by land, two if by sea” referred to those lanterns. At that time the edifice was known as Old North Church. It was erected 1723 and has been used practically without interruption since the last Sunday in December of that year except for a period during the Revolution when the church was closed “by military necessity.” (one of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BOST-MES-3A-6-ROTO-A-E-O)

Text transcribed from caption: C-31884 U.S.-BORN NIGERIAN BISHOP CHARLESTOWN, Mass. -- Bishop Edward T. Lawton of Sokoto, Nigeria, right, is shown at Charlestown, Mass., as he pointed out a model of a thatched tree house used by native Catholics in the 50,000 square miles he supervises. With him is Father John R. Grace of Providence, R.I., a fellow Dominican who induced the prelate to enter the order. Bishop Lawton, who returned briefly to his native U.S. following Vatican II, told some 1,500 persons at a reception that “Africans don’t want to be Americanized any more than Americans want to be Africanized.” Although remote areas of his diocese includes Africans slow to accept missionaries, Bishop Lawton said that “one is safer in the Nigerian bush than on the streets of Boston.” He added that “while we were apprehensive at first,” the American Peace Corps had done “tremendous things and made a great impression on the Africans.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BO-12B-64-W)

Text transcribed from caption: C-31796 MODERN DESIGN BURLINGTON, Mass. -- The newly dedicated ultra-modern St. Malachy’s church -- which some say looks like a caterpillar -- draws parishioners and sight-seers. The Burlington, Mass., church was dedicated by Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. It is named in honor of St. Malachy, 12th Century Primate of Armagh, Ireland. The building’s unusual features include a cone-shaped baptistry near the main entrance and a three-prong fork-like steeple. A glass partition divides the interior at its mid-section to separate the main church from a smaller chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CB-BOS-11A-64-NAB)
