Text transcribed from caption: PC-32230 VATICAN, PROTESTANT ECUMENISTS MEET GENEVA -- An ecumenical milestone was reached in Geneva, Switzerland, when Augustin Cardinal Bea (left), president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, became the first Prince of the Catholic Church to visit World Council of Churches headquarters. He brought with him the momentous announcement that the Vatican “greets with joy and fully accepts” the proposal approved by the WCC’s Central Committee to form a joint working group with the Catholic Church to explore aspects of cooperation and collaboration. Also welcomed at the historical occasion was Dr. Marc Boegner (right) of Paris, longtime ecumenical leader who once was a co-president of the WCC and now is honorary president of the French Protestant Federation. Text transcribed from caption: PC-32199 THE ASCENSION IN ABSTRACT ART BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- This abstract of the Ascension is one of a series of modern paintings by William Congdon, internationally known artists, on exhibit at St. Joseph’s College for Women, Brooklyn, N.Y., until March 26. The exhibit was arranged by Msgr. Raymond S. Leonard, chairman of the college’s Theology Department, with the cooperation of the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York. Mr. Congdon’s works hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, all in New York, as well as in other museums in this country and Europe. The exhibition at St. Joseph’s marks the first time that his paintings have been shown on any college or university campus in the greater metropolitan area. Visser ‘t Hooft, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, welcomes Augustine Cardinal Bea, head of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as the Roman Catholic ecumenical leader arrives in Geneva. Cardinal Bea made church history in Geneva by becoming the first Prince of the Church ever to visit the WCC’s world office and by announcing that the Vatican has accepted an invitation to hold joint conversations with representatives of the World Council. The first of these discussions by a Vatican-WCC working group was expected to take place within four months. The representatives will consider possible collaboration in such fields as social and international affairs and philanthropy and explore problems bearing on Christian unity. Addressing the more than 1,500 religious leaders, government figures and political and social scientists is Nicolai N. Inozemstev, theoretical adviser to the Central Committee of the Communist Party in the USSR and deputy chief editor of Pravda. The Russian people, he said, support the general tone of Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), the last encyclical by the late Pope John XXIII and the convocation’s basic document. Text transcribed from caption: PC-32138 MISSISSIPPI CIVIL RIGHTS INQUIRY OPENS JACKSON, Miss. -- A long-proposed inquiry into denial of voting rights and the administration of justice to Negroes in Mississippi was opened in Jackson by the six-member U.S. Civil Rights Commission, which includes Father Theodore M. Hesburgh (right), president of the University of Notre Dame. The sessions were called to order by Dr. John A. Hannah (second from left), commission chairman and president of Michigan State University. Other commission members shown are Dean Erwin N. Griswold of Harvard University’s Law School and Mrs. Frankie Muse Freeman, associate general counsel of the St. Louis Housing and Land Clearance Authorities. Other members present, but now [sic] shown here, were Eugene Patterson, editor of the Atlanta Constitution and vice-chairman of the commission, and Robert S. Rankin of the department of political science at Duke University. One of the first witnesses to appear at the hearings was Mississippi Atty. Gen. Joe T. KING MEETS WITH PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is escorted by Vice President Humphrey to the White House for a meeting with President Johnson to discuss the Negro voter registration drive in Selma, Ala. After the conference, the noted Negro Baptist leader said the President “made it clear to me that he plans to offer legislation to Congress specifically on voting rights.” Dr. King, winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, spent five days in the Dallas County, Ala., jail.
