Text transcribed from caption: CHAPLAIN TO THE WOUNDED #1677 NEW YORK -- The end of the war and demobilization have altered some aspects of the Army’s chaplain work, but for some the job is still vital. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. Here, at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, N.Y., Senior Chaplain Capt. Emmanuel Carlsen, of Chicago (left) and Assistant Chaplain John D. Laida, of Syracuse, N.Y., hold one of their daily conferences on the day’s schedule. (No. 3 of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-2C-6-D-O-P)

Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST ARIZONA’S CATHOLIC MISSION #1632 TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Xavier del Bac Mission for Papago Indian eleven miles southwest of Tucson, is striking in its symmetry and shows vestiges of the once-brilliant decoration of its interior. The mission was originally built in 1692 by the famous Spanish “Padre on Horseback,” Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a Jesuit. In the latter part of the 18th century it passed into the hands of the Franciscan Fathers, who still tend to the needs of the Indian population. Text transcribed from caption: PUNJAB SIKHS FORM COLORFUL COLONY #1545 VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Some 40 years ago pioneering Sikhs from Punjab came here and settled around Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Here a venerable priest, barefooted and cross-legged, reads the Granth, the sacred book of the Sikhs. It is a compilation of the songs of Nanak, who founded the religion 450 years ago, and those of other poets.
