It is the half-way point between Edmonton and Fairbanks on the “skyway to Asia.” The chapel windows have a historic past. Text transcribed from caption: #416 GOLD RUSH WINDOWS DECORATE CHAPEL AT WHITEHORSE, YUKON TERRITORY Whitehorse, Y.T…Chaplain Lightner A. Swan at right, whose last pastorate before entering the Army was the Lutheran Church at Missouri Valley, Ohio [sic. Iowa], shakes hands with some of the members of the congregation after services in the Pacific hut that serves as a chapel here. From left to right: Pfc. Anita McLemore of Inglewood, Calif.; Sgt. Paul Liebezeit of Chicago, Ill.; Pfc. Nancy Andrews of Goldsboro, N.C. Chaplain Swan hails from Kansas City, Mo. The chapel windows were ordered by the congregation of a little church at Lake Bennett in 1899, but the town was abandoned in 1900 when the White Pass & Yukon Railroad was opened making it unnecessary to use Lake Bennett as a waterway to Dawson City. More than forty years later, the windows were found in a Whitehorse barn, and put to use in this chapel when the airbase was opened. Credit Line Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO
