Description:
Korea (Chosen) Pyengyang - First missionary residence. This house, with about 30 acres of land, was the country estate, located just outside the walls of Pyengyang City, of a well-to-do Korean family. Using Han Suk Chin as intermediary Dr. Moffett bought this house and land for mission use in March 1893. Hearing of this the governor of Pyongon Province arrested Mr. Han and the Korean seller of the land and beat them until Dr. Moffett accepted the money back and the deal was cancelled. Two years later, in the spring of 1895, it was finally possible to purchase the same property and it became compound. About 1896 Graham Lee built another house which became the permanent Moffett home. This house was used 1900-1901 for the P.Y. Foreign School. The Bernheisels and others lived in this house for longer or shorter terms. The gentleman on the left in the picture is almost certainly Yang Chan Baek [Chinese symbols] who was, 1895-1900, evangelist for the whole Yalu River region, later pastor in Syen Chan. Richard H. Baird, May, '73.

Description:
Pyongyang Station. Taken in the Swallens' yard the fall or winter of 1923-1924. The Swallen house in the background was one of the early missionary residences in Pyongyang. The Rev. Graham Lee adapted the basic Korean bungalow style to install such comforts as stoves, closets, cupboards, etc. Mr. Lee experimented in this case by building in one second story room. In rear may be seen "Daddy" Swallen's famous Model T Ford in which he and Mrs. Swallen visited rural churches bringing many blessings and great clouds of dust.
