Description:
Text transcribed from caption: United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. UNRWA/ETJR/27. Quiet surrounding for study: Ramallah Men's Teacher Training Centre, near Jerusalem. With libraries such as this one at the Ramallah Men's Teacher Training Centre, Arab refugee students are able to concentrate more fully on their studies. All study, recreation and classroom periods of the students are concentrated within the Centre in order to provide the opportunity for better development of the total person. These young men have spent all or a majority of their lives in refugee camps and as a result have not had the opportunity to develop the discipline necessary for an intensive training course. The two year residency course at the Centre does much to help the boys gain self-reliance and enables them to contribute constructively to the future of the Middle East. Ramallah Men's Teacher Training Centre was established in 1960 and expanded in 1962. The capacity of the school is 400 with 200 new students accepted each year. Training is unconditional. Graduate students are free to seek employment in Saudi Arabia and other Arab States. 849.

These little refugee girls play, happily, in the playground of their new school in UNRWA's New Amman refugee camp. The school, which was finished in time for the new school year, in September 1968, was built, with funds donated by NEED (Near East Emergency Donations), to help ease the burden of over-crowding which resulted from the flight of thousands of refugees from the West Bank to east Jordan following the June 1967 hostilities in the Middle East. The new school buildings accommodated more than 3,200 schoolgirls, who attend in two "shifts" daily. 8118.
