Text transcribed from caption: C-31749 POPE HAILED AT MONTE CASSINO CASSINO, Italy -- Despite a pouring rain which forced him to cancel a helicopter flight from the Vatican, Pope Paul VI was warmly cheered in Cassino, Italy, where he rededicated the famed centuries-old Monte Cassino Abbey. The abbey, founded in 529 by St. Benedict -- whom the Pope named as patron of Europe -- has been rebuilt a number of times in its long history. The structure was virtually destroyed in World War II by Allied bombing following reports that the Germans were using the abbey as an observation post.
