Text transcribed from caption: P-30531 DETROIT COUNCIL NAMES NEGRO DETROIT, Mich. -- Dr. Joseph Lawrence Roberts, pastor of the 2,200-member Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church in Detroit, Mich., became the first Negro to be elected president of the Detroit Council of Churches in the 45-year history of the organization. He is shown here with Dr. G. Merrill Lenox, executive director of the Council, who noted in his remarks welcoming Dr. Roberts to the post that more than 20 percent of the organization's constituency is Negro.
