Eighteen -- 13 priests and 5 Brothers -- were deported because, according to Francois Duvalier's government, they had documents "likely to imperil the security of the state." At left, Jesuits debark from plane at Montreal Airport; at right is Father Robert Jean, showing the effects of detention and abrupt deportation. Vatican Radio said that the Duvalier dictatorship had "done much to the detriment of the Church in Haiti in recent years." Since 1959 Duvalier has expelled three bishops and 17 priests on various pretexts. The Canadian Jesuits started their Haiti mission in 1953.
