Enroute, the marchers paused briefly on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court building for prayers commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 1954 decision outlawing public school segregation. At right, Dr. Robert W. Spike, director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race, which sponsored the demonstration, follows Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D.-Minn.) down the Capitol steps. Sen. Humphrey and Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R.-N.Y.) addressed the gathering, hailing religious support of the bill.
