Text transcribed from caption: P-31067 176TH UNITED PRESBYTERIAN GENERAL ASSEMBLY OKLAHOMA CITY -- A Communion service opened the 176th General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. in Oklahoma City’s Municipal Auditorium. On hand for a full slate of business, with much emphasis on racial issues, were 841 commissioners (delegates) of the 3.3 million-member denomination’s highest governing body. Dr. Edler G. Hawkins, Negro clergyman of Bronx, N.Y., was elected moderator -- the first member of his race to become spiritual leader of the Church.
