A joint statement calling the convocation and stating that religious groups cannot watch the debate as “uninvolved spectators” was issued by Dr. Eugene Carson Blake (speaking), chief executive officer of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and head of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race; Father John F. Cronin, S.S. (left), assistant director of the Social Action Department of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, and Rabbi Uri Miller, president of the Synagogue Council of America.
