Only once before was the delicate task of peeling the canvas off the wall attempted in about 400 years, and that took place during the Spanish Civil War when Toledo and its art treasures were in peril. Following the war, the 24 by 15 feet canvas was restored and remounted on the wall of the ancient church. The painting consists of two scene symbolizing heaven and earth, with the lower portion showing the body of the count being placed into his grave by St. Stephen and St. Augustine, and the upper part depicting the count’s soul in heaven.
