OK, it is recording, it's as if it's a steady red light, it's a recording.
  • speaker
OK, this is an Ann Silverman.
  • speaker
    Interviewing Grace Shope on
  • speaker
    June 14th, 2021.
  • speaker
I wanted to ask you for a start, Grace, when did you first
  • speaker
    hear about COVID-19?
  • speaker
Do you have a recollection of that? And what was your reaction, if you can remember?
  • speaker
Well, they were predicting and it must have
  • speaker
    been late December when
  • speaker
    there were rumors and also
  • speaker
for some time there had been a prediction that we were due for a pandemic.
  • speaker
    So I was not surprised.
  • speaker
I guess my concern was the leadership that we
  • speaker
were now faced with and what they might do about it.
  • speaker
    Leadership at at the federal
  • speaker
and also the state and local level.
  • speaker
In other words, I was somewhat aware
  • speaker
of the pandemic from the early part of the 19th
  • speaker
    century, and I thought that
  • speaker
we should be prepared. However, the rumors were that we were not.
  • speaker
And what would you say were COVIDs most significant
  • speaker
    consequences for you?
  • speaker
    For me,
  • speaker
it was what is it that I'm supposed to do to protect
  • speaker
myself and by extension, my family?
  • speaker
And so I was alert to
  • speaker
    what and following instructions.
  • speaker
And I thought that I was very fortunate to have been at Cathedral
  • speaker
Village rather than at my private home in
  • speaker
    Jenkintown.
  • speaker
And what about consequences for others?
  • speaker
What do you mean by that?
  • speaker
Like what did you think were the most significant consequences or even
  • speaker
early on for other people or at any time for others?
  • speaker
Oh, well, number one understanding what the symptoms
  • speaker
would be and whether or not they were
  • speaker
    related to the flu
  • speaker
or just the common cold because they appeared to be respiratory.
  • speaker
And I had some concern for that because I myself
  • speaker
    tended to have respiratory infections
  • speaker
that would lead to bronchitis and and sometimes
  • speaker
a serious illness, though only one time did I have pneumonia.
  • speaker
Are there any particular incidents or events during COVID
  • speaker
that stand out for you and in your recollection?
  • speaker
Well, what stood out for me was that it hit us
  • speaker
immediately in March, the latter part of March.
  • speaker
    And I remember
  • speaker
Charles talking about jelly and peanut butter sandwiches, which
  • speaker
I hate, and I knew that was a joke.
  • speaker
But before the shutdown, I didn't realize it was going to be the next
  • speaker
day. But that afternoon, I did go to the grocery store
  • speaker
    and get some canned goods.
  • speaker
Charles is the Director of Cathedral Village.
  • speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So you stocked up a little bit.
  • speaker
    Yeah. But not in
  • speaker
a significant way.. I knew that somehow I am confident that we would
  • speaker
    be taken care of.
  • speaker
    Oh great.
  • speaker
COVID required new routines and new habits in people's lives.
  • speaker
And do you think this will have a lasting effect on people?
  • speaker
Well, I guess it would depend upon what your general attitude is to change.
  • speaker
Mine's kind of for the most
  • speaker
part, optimistic and has been my entire life.
  • speaker
    And so I
  • speaker
rather whether I was naive or not, I don't know.
  • speaker
But I knew we would come through.
  • speaker
I was positive that if I did what was expected
  • speaker
of me by the health professionals, it would
  • speaker
be OK. I was just concerned that
  • speaker
I was careful to keep myself from having a respiratory
  • speaker
infection. However, I had a flu shot
  • speaker
in October and so I felt good about that.
  • speaker
And I wore when they said to wear a mask and wash your hands.
  • speaker
    I followed the instructions.
  • speaker
And also, my concern was that my daughter
  • speaker
and her family would do likewise.
  • speaker
And I had a 20 year old grandson who was at Temple University,
  • speaker
and I was more concerned about him because he had extended
  • speaker
    health issues.
  • speaker
So that kind of scared me more than anything.
  • speaker
However, I knew that my daughter's attitude was similar
  • speaker
to mine and she would do whatever she could do and his father to
  • speaker
    protect their son.
  • speaker
Do you have any other observations or comments or memories that you would
  • speaker
    like to add?
  • speaker
I guess the primary thing for me
  • speaker
    is I'm I'm a doer.
  • speaker
And you can only read so many books and I watch so many
  • speaker
old movies on TV. But fortunately, it was the spring
  • speaker
of the year and I'm a gardener.
  • speaker
    And so and also
  • speaker
    I like strong physical activity
  • speaker
in terms of pushing myself to do things.
  • speaker
    I noticed that.
  • speaker
And so the gardening was probably
  • speaker
was the thing that kept me from being depressed.
  • speaker
Like some people, they just didn't know, what am I going to do?
  • speaker
And I had something to do every single day.
  • speaker
    And it was physical work.
  • speaker
So at the end of the day, I was tired.
  • speaker
And so and I think the other thing,
  • speaker
though, the thing that did stress me, though, was
  • speaker
    that was the television and
  • speaker
it was not good in terms of
  • speaker
the leadership out of the national government.
  • speaker
And so when I should've turned the TV off,
  • speaker
I, I kept it on and I listened to the nonsense and that
  • speaker
    was distressing.
  • speaker
But I, I was aware of that.
  • speaker
And so I, I attempted to limit it unless
  • speaker
someone would say did you hear and I had not heard then
  • speaker
I would turn the TV back on again and see what I missed.
  • speaker
And it wasn't that was not helpful.
  • speaker
Well, thank you so much, did I did anything else you wanted
  • speaker
    to add?
  • speaker
No other than I'm glad that I had
  • speaker
something to do in the season that you do it.
  • speaker
And it kept me going then on through
  • speaker
the fall and into the winter because I knew spring would come again.
  • speaker
Right. Thank you very, very much, Grace.
