Persian wild ass (the presumptive progenitor of the animal in the photograph), a male's height at the shoulder is given as 50 in., a female's as 44 in. Extinct and vanishing mammals of the Old World. Perhaps the measurement given on the back of the photographs, the original of which belonged to Mrs. Hawkes, applied to the distance from the top of the head to the ground. F.H. 4-16-70.
