CHURCH-SPONSORED HONDURAS PROJECT


HOUSTON, Texas--The vanguard of some 250 volunteers in a church-


sponsored mass vaccination project in Honduras prepares to leave from


the Houston, Texas, home base. Photo at left shows three students


leading a truck with medicines and other supplies. They are Rick


Keener, 17; Ed Frank, 16; and Ken Lindow, 18. At right is Maj.


Ruben Villanueva of the Honduran Army entering a Scout, one of seven


vehicles driven by the teams to the Central American country. He is


acting as a government liaison officer. Participating in the inter-


religious and interracial "Amigos de Honduras" project are physicians


and specially trained adults and students. They are visiting


designated rural areas in the western Honduras to innoculate men,


women and children against such diseases as smallpox, tuberculosis,


typhoid, typhus and tetanus. Sponsor and originator of the project


is River Oaks Baptist church in Houston. The interracial teams of


volunteers include Protestant, Catholic and Jewish workers.
