NEW MASS HONORS PATRON OF EUROPE

VATICAN CITY -- A new Mass honoring St. Benedict under the title of

Protector of Europe, conferred on him by Pope Paul VI last October,

has been approved by the Sacred Congregation of Rites. It may be

offered in all European Catholic churches on July 11. Traditionally

venerated as the Father of Western monasticism -- he founded Italy's

famed Abbey of Monte Cassino in 529 -- St. Benedict has also been

called "the Father of Western Europe" and "the Father of Peace." His

universal feast day falls on March 21.
