INDIAN CHIEF EVICTS PRIEST
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--An Indian governor evicts a Roman Catholic priest
from the Indian village he served. Andy Abeita, left, handcuffed
Msgr. Frederick A. Stadtmueller, right, when the priest refused to
leave the 152-year-old Church of St. Augustine at Isleta Pueblo, N.M.
Msgr. Stadtmueller told newsmen that Mr. Abeita had charged him with
attempting to change Indians' religious traditions. He said he could
not leave his mission unless ordered to do so by Archbishop James P.
Davis of Santa Fe. The church, founded in 1613, is owned by the
Catholic Church although within the Indian village.
