PICKETS AT THE CHANCERY

NEW YORK--Barry F. Ryan (right), president of the Federation of

Catholic Teachers, joins fellow teachers in picketing the New York

archdiocese chancery offices during the first day of a lay teacher

strike against archdiocesan schools.

Both sides claimed initial success as the strike began, with the

teachers' union saying the strike was "85 per cent effective" in about

100 schools and the archdiocesan superintendent of schools reporting

that all but two of the 314 schools were open with "full classroom

participation for children."
