WORKING TOWARDS LITERACY

(Second of Two Photos)

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- As her son plays beside her, a woman

practices spelling and handwriting in her home near San Pedro Sula,

Honduras. She is one of the women in her barrio who is enrolled in

the Alfalit program.

The Alfalit approach to literacy emphasizes "skill" rather than

"content" and includes simple arithmetic in its curriculum. The

interdenominational literacy project also has programs in Honduras

prisons and military camps.
