CALCUTTA, INDIA: At Ahespur Camp, about 45 miles from
Calcutta, a father sits and watches over his dying
son recently. Since the outbreak of civil strife in
East Pakistan, UNICEF sources report, over 9.5 million
East Pakistanti refugees have crossed the border into
India's northeastern region. They have flooded into
temporary camps such as Ahespur. At the camps,
children already weakened by malnutrition are easy
prey for pneumonia and gastro-enteritic diseases.
UNICEF reports that the World Bank has estimated the
cost of aiding the refugees for one year at
roughly $700 million. UNICEF has played a large role
in efforts to aid the refugees. The organization has
been primarily involved in the Operation Lifeline
feeding programs for children in the camps by
providing food, transport and supplies for Lifeline
Alpha, a supplementary feeding program designed to
reach over 2 million children, and Beta, descibed as
a curative nutrition therapy program for sick
and malnourished children in hospital. It is hoped that
Lifeline Beta will reach some 115,000 children.
