ISRAELI AMBASSADOR TO COLOMBIA RETURNS HOME AFTER ORDEAL
TEL AVIV, Israel--Israeli Ambassador to Colombia, Eliyahu Barak, right,
is all smiles as he is greeted by Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir on April
28 at Tel Aviv, after returning from his 61-day ordeal as hostage inside
the Dominican Embassy in Bogota.
The takeover ended when Mr. Barak was released with
the ambassadors of Egypt, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic at Bogota,
while the 16 guerrillas of the Movement of April 19 flew with 12 remaining
captives to Havana, Cuba, where all were set free.
It was a quiet end to the two-month siege which began violently
on Feb. 27, when the leftist terrorists shot their way into a diplomatic
reception and seized 57 hostages. During earlier stages, 40 of these were
released and the Uruguayan ambassador escaped.
