ADL WARNS OF LIKELY KKK VIOLENCE DURING SUMMER
NEW YORK--The Ku Klux Klan marches during a recent summer's rally
in Davie, Fla., as part of a full day's events which included
a cross-burning.
In a report to the U.S. Comission on Civil Rights, Irvin
Suall, director of the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) Fact Finding
Department, said the KKK -- "heavily armed and pursuing deliberate
confrontation tactics" -- is likely to provoke fresh violence this
spring and summer. Mr. Suall emphasized that "increaded vigilance
from law enforcement officials and greater awareness on the public's
part" was necessary to thwart the threat.
The reasons for the anticipated escalation of KKK activities are
threefold the ADL report warned: the warmer weather, increased
competition among Klan members for headlines and announcements by
leftist groups of plans to stage "direct, violent confrontations"
and counter demonstrations.
