STREET VIOLENCE RAGES DURING FUNERAL OF ARCHBISHOP ROMERO
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador--An armed man hides his face as he runs from
a burning car and another terrorist, left rear, throws a Molotov
cocktail during street violence which erupted on Mar. 30 in San
Salvador, as the funeral Mass was in progress for Archbishop Oscar
Arnulfo Romero in Metropolitan Cathedral.
When the shooting began, Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco,
the president of Catholic Bishops in the United States and other
officials from England, Ireland, Canada, Belgium and Latin American
countries were at the altar officiating at the rites for Archbishop
Romero. Cardinal Ernesto Corripio Ahumada, of Mexico, was nearing the
end of his eulogy and had just said, "We cannot love by hating. We
cannot defend life by killing," -- then the first explosion occurred.
