PRESENTATION OF MOTHER JOSEPH STATUE SLATED AT CAPITOL
WASHINGTON--Sculptor Felix de Weldon, who created the U.S. Marines'
memorial, "Iwo Jima Flag Raising," puts finishing touches to his
statue of Mother Joseph, a Sister of Providence. It will be presented
to President Carter by Governor Dixy Lee Ray of Washington State, during
ceremonies at the U.S. Capitol rotunda on May 1.
Mother Joseph was responsible for the establishment of numerous
hospitals, schools, orphanages, homes for the aged and shelters for the
mentally ill, during 46 years of work. She started the Sisters of
Providence Corporation -- one of the oldest corporations registered in
what is now the State of Washington.
