SOUTH KOREAN STUDENTS DEMAND END OF MARTIAL LAW

SEOUL, South Korea--Baton-swinging riot police repel

students who rallied near Yonsei University in Seoul on

May 13 to demand an end to martail law in their country.

The protesting South Koreans have called on the government

to accelerate the process of political change so that the

country can choose a new president and National Assembly,

and have also insisted on the resignation of Lieut. Gen. Chon

Too Hwan, the ehad of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency

and chief of the Defense Security Command.

After several days of anti-government demonstrations,

Prime Minister Shin Hyon Hwak announced that an effort would be made

to meet some of the students' demands. However, no

timetable was given for increasing the tempo of democratic

change.
