Dr. Livingstone des Etats Unis d'Amerique de mille puissants a dix neuf cents quatre vingt douze [Anthem]
  • speaker
[Anthem ends] It is good for us to remember that the Apostle Paul was a
  • speaker
missionary, like Dr. Good, [Good, Adolphus Clemens] who came to
  • speaker
your country many years ago to preach the Gospel [Bulu] And to build
  • speaker
the Church of Jesus Christ. [Bulu] St. Paul
  • speaker
left his own home and travelled to Galatia. [Bulu]
  • speaker
    The men and women
  • speaker
who responded to his preaching were saved by the grace of God [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
and they were bound into a Christian church by the Spirit of
  • speaker
    God. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
What happened in Galatia happened in your country. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
And, it happens to you [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Paul had to leave the new church as he travelled on to other cities.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
and other regions where people have never heard of
  • speaker
    Jesus. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
So all Christians must be missionaries to carry the Gospel wherever
  • speaker
there are those who do not know our law. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
The church in Galatia continued to
  • speaker
grow. [Bulu translation] Then word came
  • speaker
to the Apostle Paul got the new church was being persuaded by Paul's
  • speaker
    teachers [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
to change of its laws of membership to
  • speaker
add to the Gospel's man-made laws.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
whose information also told him that some of the Christians
  • speaker
were falling away from the good light, which he had taught them.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Some had been tempted by the sins of the flesh, drunkeness,
  • speaker
    impurity and the like.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
and to fall back into old superstitions.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Still others were tempted by their ambition and their jealousy,
  • speaker
no longer to treat all their fellow Christians in the church as brothers, but rather
  • speaker
as rivals and as enemies. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
when Paul the missionary heard these things, he was troubled.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] He wrote a letter
  • speaker
to the church in Galatia.[Bulu translation] A letter which is
  • speaker
now part of the Bible. [Bulu translation] A part
  • speaker
from which my text was taken. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
On this happy day of the new freedom and independence of the Presbyterian
  • speaker
    Church in Cameroon, [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
marked by the founding of your
  • speaker
own General Assembly. [Bulu translation] General
  • speaker
Assembly. I want to talk to you about Christian
  • speaker
    liberty. [Bulu translation] I
  • speaker
do not need to remind you that from this day you and your church are in-
  • speaker
    dependent and free. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    You may do
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
The highest authority under God in your church will be this new
  • speaker
    General Assembly. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    General Assembly today is established.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] You are an independent church.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] with all the rights and freedom
  • speaker
of any church in the whole wide world, [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
like my church in the United States from which I come [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    And,
  • speaker
like the church in Galatia, which the missionary Paul founded.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation] If you
  • speaker
have all the liberty and the rights of the churches of the world. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    you have all
  • speaker
the duties and responsibilities [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
and all the temptations to sin that other
  • speaker
independent churches have had and still have.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
I do notp reach this sermon therefore as
  • speaker
one who represents a church which is essentially different,
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
or a church which is perfect. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Nor a church which knows all the answers.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] My church, your new church, the Churhc in Galatia all
  • speaker
needed and need to hear the word from God and to do it. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    I preach from the letter
  • speaker
written by the Apostle [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
written first to the church in Galatia. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
then to my church in America and then to you. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Here is my text. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
For you were called to freedom, brethren, [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Only do not use your freedom as
  • speaker
an opportunity for the flesh [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    But through
  • speaker
love, be servants of one another. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
God wants you to be free. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    Christ has made you free.
  • speaker
but there is no joy like that of being free from slavery.
  • speaker
    I remind you. I
  • speaker
remind you that there are many kinds of freedom. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
first freedom, [Bulu translation] political freedom
  • speaker
personal freedom and every freedom has
  • speaker
    its danger. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
The people of a number of new nations in Asia and Africa, which now have new independence [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
find themselves in new struggles to be sure they do not lose their freedom
  • speaker
to a new slavery under a dictator of their own.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
You, in your new church, which is now free and independent, [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
run the risk that your own laws and your own leaders will put new chains on you.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    And the man
  • speaker
freed by Christ from bondage to sin, no longer afraid
  • speaker
of the old taboos or bound by the ancient laws of bribe
  • speaker
    or people [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    in
  • speaker
his new freedom, finds it harder than all the slavery
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Freedom is sometimes like strong drink. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
To drink it makes a man feel wonderful for a little
  • speaker
while. [Bulu translation] Next morning, he
  • speaker
    has had [Bulu]
  • speaker
sorrow. If Christian liberty is not to carry new sorrows,
  • speaker
new troubles [Bulu translation] you need to
  • speaker
listen carefully to what the Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Galatia.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] First, because freedom is good.
  • speaker
[Bulu] You want to be free. Only
  • speaker
do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
He lists in the chapter the works of the flesh. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Let me remind you of them in
  • speaker
    three classes [Bulu]
  • speaker
first, there are the temptations that come to all men. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
to minister to the wants of their bodies in such ways as injure themselves and others [Bulu translation
  • speaker
combine a minimum up mentally and done about again are built a bit more
  • speaker
    immorality, impurity, licentiousness, [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
drunkeness, carousing and the like. [Bulu]
  • speaker
    One of the hard tasks
  • speaker
Of your synods and presbyteries and of this General Assembly
  • speaker
will be to find a way to keep your churches`
  • speaker
because the candidate belongs to another tribe or clan or presbytery.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] will be unwilling to vote for
  • speaker
    him[Bulu translation]
  • speaker
and the candidate himself can so easily fool himself
  • speaker
    [Bulu] that they are
  • speaker
seeking the place for the good of the church, [Bulu]
  • speaker
when really they are thinking of a salary or house.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
    personal honor, [Bulu]
  • speaker
All of this happened in my church in America. It happened in Galatia.
  • speaker
[Bulu] I pray to God that he will keep your church as free as possible
  • speaker
    [Bulu]
  • speaker
    from party strife [Bulu]
  • speaker
The third class of the works of the flesh that St. Paul lists,
  • speaker
are those temptations to fall back in the old pagan ways of life.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
He names justiice, he names just two
  • speaker
    [Bulu]
  • speaker
    idolatry [Bulu] and sorcery.
  • speaker
new and independent churches, smalll among the people of Africa.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
it is hard not to be influenced by the superstitions
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
The taboos are misery of the people of this Continent.
  • speaker
Pray to God that he may keep you all free
  • speaker
    [Bulu] from falling
  • speaker
back into the slavery of fear and of superstition.
  • speaker
against all these things Paul warned the Church in Galatia
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] I warn you that those who do such things
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
shall not inherit the Kingdom of God. [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
Those who belong to Christ Jesus [Bulu] and desires
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation]
  • speaker
These are the dangers of freedom for all its opportunities.
  • speaker
In true love, be servants of one another.
  • speaker
[Bulu translation] You are not to be You are to serve one another. Serve one another in Christ, in love as Christ loved us.
  • speaker
    [Bulu] and gave himself up
  • speaker
[Bulu] Christan liberty is not freedom
  • speaker
to do anything you desire or choose.
  • speaker
[BUlu translation] Whether in the state or in the church, [Bulu]
  • speaker
Christian freedom is the freedom to serve one another in love.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation] May your
  • speaker
faithfulness to Jesus Christ so set you free.
  • speaker
    [Bulu translation] Amen.
  • speaker
    Amen.
  • speaker
Let us pray. Almighty and ever
  • speaker
Blessed God, in whom we live and move and have our being
  • speaker
on this occasion fraught with such deep meaning and such great possibility, we come
  • speaker
in simple faith and with a certain confidence, seeking communion with these through prayer.
  • speaker
We praise and magnify Thy holy name and the power that has redeemed us
  • speaker
For thy patience, which has nurtured us, and for Thy love that has ever surrounded us.
  • speaker
We rejoice in thy faithfulness, goodness and mercy to all men. We thank thee
  • speaker
`that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and rose again triumphant that
  • speaker
we might through faith in him come to a knowledge of salvation and enter into eternal
  • speaker
life. We praise these that this good news has encircled this whole earth.
  • speaker
Bringing its rich blessings to men of every race and tribe.
  • speaker
Particularly do we offer our gratitude for the response to the Gospel in this land. And for the
  • speaker
tens of thousands, who now lovingly confess Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.
  • speaker
Grant, we beseech thee, that the church of Jesus Christ in Cameroun may be
  • speaker
of one heart and of one soul may thy
  • speaker
servants, who have been ordained to the ministry of the Gospel, that they may be strong to know and to do thy will
  • speaker
Thank you also for the witness of those who have the love of Christ and for their fellow man, serve devotedly as teachers
  • speaker
doctors, Jesus Christ, our Lord, with whom we join, forever
  • speaker
    and ever. Amen.
