- speaker[Anthem ends] It is good for us to remember that the Apostle Paul was a
- speakermissionary, like Dr. Good, [Good, Adolphus Clemens] who came to
- speakeryour country many years ago to preach the Gospel [Bulu] And to build
- speakerthe Church of Jesus Christ. [Bulu] St. Paul
- speakerleft his own home and travelled to Galatia. [Bulu]
- speakerThe men and women
- speakerwho responded to his preaching were saved by the grace of God [Bulu translation]
- speakerand they were bound into a Christian church by the Spirit of
- speakerGod. [Bulu translation]
- speakerWhat happened in Galatia happened in your country. [Bulu translation]
- speakerAnd, it happens to you [Bulu translation]
- speakerPaul had to leave the new church as he travelled on to other cities.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerand other regions where people have never heard of
- speakerJesus. [Bulu translation]
- speakerSo all Christians must be missionaries to carry the Gospel wherever
- speakerthere are those who do not know our law. [Bulu translation]
- speakerThe church in Galatia continued to
- speakergrow. [Bulu translation] Then word came
- speakerto the Apostle Paul got the new church was being persuaded by Paul's
- speakerteachers [Bulu translation]
- speakerto change of its laws of membership to
- speakeradd to the Gospel's man-made laws.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerwhose information also told him that some of the Christians
- speakerwere falling away from the good light, which he had taught them.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerSome had been tempted by the sins of the flesh, drunkeness,
- speakerimpurity and the like.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerand to fall back into old superstitions.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerStill others were tempted by their ambition and their jealousy,
- speakerno longer to treat all their fellow Christians in the church as brothers, but rather
- speakeras rivals and as enemies. [Bulu translation]
- speakerwhen Paul the missionary heard these things, he was troubled.
- speaker[Bulu translation] He wrote a letter
- speakerto the church in Galatia.[Bulu translation] A letter which is
- speakernow part of the Bible. [Bulu translation] A part
- speakerfrom which my text was taken. [Bulu translation]
- speakerOn this happy day of the new freedom and independence of the Presbyterian
- speakerChurch in Cameroon, [Bulu translation]
- speakermarked by the founding of your
- speakerown General Assembly. [Bulu translation] General
- speakerAssembly. I want to talk to you about Christian
- speakerliberty. [Bulu translation] I
- speakerdo not need to remind you that from this day you and your church are in-
- speakerdependent and free. [Bulu translation]
- speakerYou may do
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerThe highest authority under God in your church will be this new
- speakerGeneral Assembly. [Bulu translation]
- speakerGeneral Assembly today is established.
- speaker[Bulu translation] You are an independent church.
- speaker[Bulu translation] with all the rights and freedom
- speakerof any church in the whole wide world, [Bulu translation]
- speakerlike my church in the United States from which I come [Bulu translation]
- speakerAnd,
- speakerlike the church in Galatia, which the missionary Paul founded.
- speaker[Bulu translation] If you
- speakerhave all the liberty and the rights of the churches of the world. [Bulu translation]
- speakeryou have all
- speakerthe duties and responsibilities [Bulu translation]
- speakerand all the temptations to sin that other
- speakerindependent churches have had and still have.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerI do notp reach this sermon therefore as
- speakerone who represents a church which is essentially different,
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakeror a church which is perfect. [Bulu translation]
- speakerNor a church which knows all the answers.
- speaker[Bulu translation] My church, your new church, the Churhc in Galatia all
- speakerneeded and need to hear the word from God and to do it. [Bulu translation]
- speakerI preach from the letter
- speakerwritten by the Apostle [Bulu translation]
- speakerwritten first to the church in Galatia. [Bulu translation]
- speakerthen to my church in America and then to you. [Bulu translation]
- speakerHere is my text. [Bulu translation]
- speakerFor you were called to freedom, brethren, [Bulu translation]
- speakerOnly do not use your freedom as
- speakeran opportunity for the flesh [Bulu translation]
- speakerBut through
- speakerlove, be servants of one another. [Bulu translation]
- speakerGod wants you to be free. [Bulu translation]
- speakerChrist has made you free.
- speakerbut there is no joy like that of being free from slavery.
- speakerI remind you. I
- speakerremind you that there are many kinds of freedom. [Bulu translation]
- speakerfirst freedom, [Bulu translation] political freedom
- speakerpersonal freedom and every freedom has
- speakerits danger. [Bulu translation]
- speakerThe people of a number of new nations in Asia and Africa, which now have new independence [Bulu translation]
- speakerfind themselves in new struggles to be sure they do not lose their freedom
- speakerto a new slavery under a dictator of their own.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerYou, in your new church, which is now free and independent, [Bulu translation]
- speakerrun the risk that your own laws and your own leaders will put new chains on you.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerAnd the man
- speakerfreed by Christ from bondage to sin, no longer afraid
- speakerof the old taboos or bound by the ancient laws of bribe
- speakeror people [Bulu translation]
- speakerin
- speakerhis new freedom, finds it harder than all the slavery
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerFreedom is sometimes like strong drink. [Bulu translation]
- speakerTo drink it makes a man feel wonderful for a little
- speakerwhile. [Bulu translation] Next morning, he
- speakerhas had [Bulu]
- speakersorrow. If Christian liberty is not to carry new sorrows,
- speakernew troubles [Bulu translation] you need to
- speakerlisten carefully to what the Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Galatia.
- speaker[Bulu translation] First, because freedom is good.
- speaker[Bulu] You want to be free. Only
- speakerdo not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. [Bulu translation]
- speakerHe lists in the chapter the works of the flesh. [Bulu translation]
- speakerLet me remind you of them in
- speakerthree classes [Bulu]
- speakerfirst, there are the temptations that come to all men. [Bulu translation]
- speakerto minister to the wants of their bodies in such ways as injure themselves and others [Bulu translation
- speakercombine a minimum up mentally and done about again are built a bit more
- speakerimmorality, impurity, licentiousness, [Bulu translation]
- speakerdrunkeness, carousing and the like. [Bulu]
- speakerOne of the hard tasks
- speakerOf your synods and presbyteries and of this General Assembly
- speakerwill be to find a way to keep your churches`
- speakerbecause the candidate belongs to another tribe or clan or presbytery.
- speaker[Bulu translation] will be unwilling to vote for
- speakerhim[Bulu translation]
- speakerand the candidate himself can so easily fool himself
- speaker[Bulu] that they are
- speakerseeking the place for the good of the church, [Bulu]
- speakerwhen really they are thinking of a salary or house.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerpersonal honor, [Bulu]
- speakerAll of this happened in my church in America. It happened in Galatia.
- speaker[Bulu] I pray to God that he will keep your church as free as possible
- speaker[Bulu]
- speakerfrom party strife [Bulu]
- speakerThe third class of the works of the flesh that St. Paul lists,
- speakerare those temptations to fall back in the old pagan ways of life.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerHe names justiice, he names just two
- speaker[Bulu]
- speakeridolatry [Bulu] and sorcery.
- speakernew and independent churches, smalll among the people of Africa.
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerit is hard not to be influenced by the superstitions
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerThe taboos are misery of the people of this Continent.
- speakerPray to God that he may keep you all free
- speaker[Bulu] from falling
- speakerback into the slavery of fear and of superstition.
- speakeragainst all these things Paul warned the Church in Galatia
- speaker[Bulu translation] I warn you that those who do such things
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakershall not inherit the Kingdom of God. [Bulu translation]
- speakerThose who belong to Christ Jesus [Bulu] and desires
- speaker[Bulu translation]
- speakerThese are the dangers of freedom for all its opportunities.
- speakerIn true love, be servants of one another.
- speaker[Bulu translation] You are not to be You are to serve one another. Serve one another in Christ, in love as Christ loved us.
- speaker[Bulu] and gave himself up
- speaker[Bulu] Christan liberty is not freedom
- speakerto do anything you desire or choose.
- speaker[BUlu translation] Whether in the state or in the church, [Bulu]
- speakerChristian freedom is the freedom to serve one another in love.
- speaker[Bulu translation] May your
- speakerfaithfulness to Jesus Christ so set you free.
- speaker[Bulu translation] Amen.
- speakerAmen.
- speakerLet us pray. Almighty and ever
- speakerBlessed God, in whom we live and move and have our being
- speakeron this occasion fraught with such deep meaning and such great possibility, we come
- speakerin simple faith and with a certain confidence, seeking communion with these through prayer.
- speakerWe praise and magnify Thy holy name and the power that has redeemed us
- speakerFor thy patience, which has nurtured us, and for Thy love that has ever surrounded us.
- speakerWe rejoice in thy faithfulness, goodness and mercy to all men. We thank thee
- speaker`that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and rose again triumphant that
- speakerwe might through faith in him come to a knowledge of salvation and enter into eternal
- speakerlife. We praise these that this good news has encircled this whole earth.
- speakerBringing its rich blessings to men of every race and tribe.
- speakerParticularly do we offer our gratitude for the response to the Gospel in this land. And for the
- speakertens of thousands, who now lovingly confess Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.
- speakerGrant, we beseech thee, that the church of Jesus Christ in Cameroun may be
- speakerof one heart and of one soul may thy
- speakerservants, who have been ordained to the ministry of the Gospel, that they may be strong to know and to do thy will
- speakerThank you also for the witness of those who have the love of Christ and for their fellow man, serve devotedly as teachers
- speakerdoctors, Jesus Christ, our Lord, with whom we join, forever
- speakerand ever. Amen.
