    It
  • speaker
is my privilege on behalf of the session of our San Marino Community Church to
  • speaker
emphasize the basic need which brings us
  • speaker
together. In brief that need is this. We
  • speaker
who try to provide Christian education for the boys and girls of this
  • speaker
community know that we are voices in the wilderness unless we
  • speaker
are echoing here at the church what is being taught by word and attitude
  • speaker
    and action at
  • speaker
home. If you prefer to take the long chance that
  • speaker
somehow something may happen, regardless of what you do at
  • speaker
    home, that is your
  • speaker
responsibility. We insist however that you hear us
  • speaker
state our position, for we know from experience, both happy
  • speaker
    and
  • speaker
sad that unless we enter an
  • speaker
understanding positive and joyful partnership with the
  • speaker
parents, we are working against odds which only God
  • speaker
Himself can overcome. It was a church school superintendent Ralph
  • speaker
    N. MacIntyre of Topeka,
  • speaker
Kansas, who documented how church loyalty is recapitulated in
  • speaker
the children of our church homes. He made a study of
  • speaker
seven hundred church school pupils under age twenty who dropped
  • speaker
    out of the church school
  • speaker
for other than good reasons. Of that number,
  • speaker
    only three
  • speaker
were children of parents who were active church members. On
  • speaker
the other hand. Professor Paul Veith [Veith, Paul Herman, 1895-1978] of Yale University Divinity
  • speaker
School reports that more than ninety percent of those unite with the
  • speaker
church come from homes whose fathers and mothers are participating church
  • speaker
    members. Nearly every Protestant denomination
  • speaker
now relates its church school curriculum, in greater or lesser extent, to the
  • speaker
home. Slowly they are returning to that pattern of the
  • speaker
Reformation days when the Christian education of children was centered by the
  • speaker
    hearth side.
  • speaker
Martin Luther, who constructed his catechism to be taught by parents,
  • speaker
was convinced in his words that the home is
  • speaker
the God ordained place for training in Christian
  • speaker
character, a thousand times better suited for this purpose
  • speaker
than artificial monasteries as a minister. I
  • speaker
wish often that I were in the kind of institution which could require parents to
  • speaker
be present with their children somewhere at the
  • speaker
    church every Lord's
  • speaker
Day. We want you to be under
  • speaker
no illusion about what we hope will happen here.
  • speaker
The Christian Faith and Life Curriculum, which we
  • speaker
use, is a program for church and
  • speaker
home. Each word in that title is
  • speaker
significant. "Christian." This involves and should
  • speaker
result in our commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and
  • speaker
Savior. "Faith." By the grace of God we
  • speaker
    can respond to
  • speaker
his call and ought to. And, "Life."
  • speaker
This response to the will of God is for the whole of our lives. And, we
  • speaker
must seek to do His will in everyday living.
  • speaker
A program involving persons and materials
  • speaker
    with plans for making Christian
  • speaker
    disciples. For church a total
  • speaker
educational program in which the Sunday church school
  • speaker
provides training and experience for which the final goal is
  • speaker
Christian discipleship and membership in the
  • speaker
    church and
  • speaker
home. In God's plan there is no substitute for
  • speaker
parents in guiding the growth of their children in the Christian
  • speaker
faith. The home is truly the first place for
  • speaker
Christian nurture. The purpose of the curriculum is to guide
  • speaker
every person to Jesus Christ so that, through him, they
  • speaker
may come to a true knowledge of God and to a living
  • speaker
faith, and through the power of the Holy Spirit live as Christ's
  • speaker
disciples in the fellowship of the
  • speaker
church. This is what we mean. And
  • speaker
we invite you to share in what is the most important phase of your
  • speaker
    child's education. Because, if all
  • speaker
    this happens as God plans
  • speaker
it, what we teach together at
  • speaker
    home and at the
  • speaker
church will become your child's and, we pray,
  • speaker
    your
  • speaker
    faith and life, your Christian
  • speaker
    faith and
  • speaker
life. [Organ plays hymn "O God, Our Help in Ages Past."]
  • speaker
    This
  • speaker
presentation was planned by the Home and Church Committee of the San Marino Community Church, a
  • speaker
    Presbyterian
  • speaker
Church. The original script with written by Mrs Tyler Oven.
  • speaker
And, credit should be given to others for help for revisions.
  • speaker
Mr RAY Bergstrom was chiefly responsible for the photography with the help and direction of Miss
  • speaker
    Gertrude
  • speaker
Harvard. And, we are deeply indebted to Bill Peters as our
  • speaker
    recording engineer.
  • speaker
    Mr
  • speaker
and Mrs Young Parent, Janet and
  • speaker
Phil and their children, four year old Martha and twelve year old
  • speaker
Mike, were living in the neighborhood of the San Marino Community Church.
  • speaker
Janet had felt a pressing need for becoming a part of a church. She wanted her children to learn to
  • speaker
    feel this need
  • speaker
too. It has not been easy to express this to
  • speaker
    her husband
  • speaker
Phil. Like many people, Phil felt pretty
  • speaker
adequate within himself. He had never consciously felt
  • speaker
the kind of need Janet experienced so keenly. His life was full of responsibilities,
  • speaker
the demands of his business and forced routine and the need for earning a
  • speaker
    living.
  • speaker
    one day Janet
  • speaker
said. "Phil, we've gone on our own long enough. I think
  • speaker
it is important for the children to go to Sunday School
  • speaker
now." "Important! Oh, no! I don't think it's
  • speaker
    important at
  • speaker
    all." So, on the following
  • speaker
Sunday, they visited the nearest church.
  • speaker
    [Organ plays "Fairest Lord Jesus.]
  • speaker
    They explored the children's
  • speaker
building, noting the facilities for preschool children,
  • speaker
    the kindergarten,
  • speaker
    the second grade, the fourth
  • speaker
grade. In every room Janet and
  • speaker
Phil were pleased with the cheerful environment.
  • speaker
The new youth building was next on their
  • speaker
tour. "What a perfect place for Mike, when
  • speaker
he becomes a teenager to join his friends and enjoy real fun and
  • speaker
fellowship. And, maybe he could join a youth
  • speaker
choir." They noticed a glassed in bulletin
  • speaker
board with snapshots of one hundred and seventy five church school teachers,
  • speaker
    all volunteer
  • speaker
workers. " Hmm. Lots of working members in this
  • speaker
    church. That's good."
  • speaker
Just notice how many men are teaching. That doesn't begin to number all
  • speaker
the people who are at work
  • speaker
    here. In the sanctuary,
  • speaker
Janet looked up at the breathtaking beauty of the benediction window. And, she knew that Phil
  • speaker
too was moved by its simplicity and
  • speaker
    splendor.
  • speaker
The next Sunday they decided to go back. They went to the office to register
  • speaker
    their
  • speaker
    children. At the registration
  • speaker
desk, they filled out their first time registration form and paid their tuition for the
  • speaker
    family. The registrar
  • speaker
said, "This goes toward the cost of the whole year's Christian
  • speaker
    education
  • speaker
expenses." The registrar added that the board of elders or
  • speaker
session ruled that parents are expected to attend a parent
  • speaker
    meeting.
  • speaker
The mother ahead of them had
  • speaker
protested, "What again? I attended one last year. I don't
  • speaker
    have time to go again."
  • speaker
Yes. the parents are expected to attend at least one meeting each year as a part of
  • speaker
    their children's registration for church
  • speaker
school. Their predecessor in line had seemed a little miffed.
  • speaker
But businessman Phil took it in his
  • speaker
stride. Rules are rules. And who knows? I
  • speaker
may learn something. Keep that open mind.
  • speaker
Let's see what was that meeting
  • speaker
date. The young parents had made a good decision
  • speaker
today. The family had come to church
  • speaker
    together.
  • speaker
    Later
  • speaker
that day Phil tried to explain to a friend why he had to change his plans for the night of the parent
  • speaker
meeting. You fellows will never miss me. No. It's
  • speaker
a meeting for parents. No. I think the church does have a right to expect us to
  • speaker
come to just one meeting. Oh well you get along without me.
  • speaker
    Yeah I made up my
  • speaker
    mind. See you later.
  • speaker
    Goodbye.
  • speaker
Don't say a word, my dear. You know I agree with you, but I'm glad to see you're
  • speaker
    beginning to be convinced
  • speaker
    yourself.
  • speaker
    [instrumental interlude.]
  • speaker
[Choral anthem with brass, "Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past"]
  • speaker
    At
  • speaker
the parent meeting, Janet and Phil were given their
  • speaker
materials. They were the new parent teacher magazine published every
  • speaker
    three
  • speaker
    months" Growing. Opening Doors.
  • speaker
    Discovery. possible in This
  • speaker
    Generation. The registrar told
  • speaker
them. You should try to read at least one magazine each quarter. There is a
  • speaker
lesson for every Sunday in the quarter and if a child should be absent for any
  • speaker
reason, the parent can help him at home.
  • speaker
Actually there are study guides in the Faith and Life
  • speaker
curriculum for pre-three children through senior adult.
  • speaker
The reading books for the children will be given out at church school. But these copies are here
  • speaker
for display. There are simple and beautifully illustrated stories for preschool
  • speaker
children and those in grades one, two and three.
  • speaker
And well written and interesting books for fourth graders through high school. The parents were told that they
  • speaker
too should read the books that each of their children
  • speaker
received. They were told that in the Faith and Life
  • speaker
curriculum everyone will be studying the life of Christ this year,
  • speaker
    each on his own level.
  • speaker
Well take for example a second grader. Will he be studying the life of Christ
  • speaker
this year? Yes. And, when he comes back to this scene in three years in the
  • speaker
fifth grade, he will be studying it on a more mature level.
  • speaker
I see. I suppose he'll study it again the next time in the eighth grade.
  • speaker
That's right with a still different emphasis, particularly stressing the
  • speaker
    young person's relationship to
  • speaker
    Jesus. The
  • speaker
teaching material is planned to rotate on a three-year cycle around the
  • speaker
themes of Christ, the Bible, and the church. This will include all
  • speaker
ages from preschool through senior adult. If you miss a Sunday, you
  • speaker
never come back to the same material in the same way again.
  • speaker
Well then it's important for the family to follow along at home.
  • speaker
Yes. Or at least create the kind of climate in the home where it is natural
  • speaker
for the family to discuss religious questions.
  • speaker
    Phil thought.
  • speaker
Well this is no hit and miss program for Christian an
  • speaker
    education.
  • speaker
One year of the curriculum is devoted to the study of the Bible
  • speaker
to awaken our faith in Christ. Last year
  • speaker
we studied the growth of the church from the time of Christ down through the work of
  • speaker
the Reformation leaders, such as John
  • speaker
Calvin, to the present day spread of the gospel around the
  • speaker
    world.
  • speaker
    This
  • speaker
year we are concerned with the events and experiences in the life of our Lord Jesus
  • speaker
Christ, who he is, what he
  • speaker
does, and with bringing our children into a real relationship with
  • speaker
Him. The children will learn that the Jewish people had
  • speaker
waited long for the promised Messiah. Christian faith sees
  • speaker
in Christ one who was human as we
  • speaker
    are and yet was
  • speaker
God. They will discover that the boy Jesus was
  • speaker
dedicated to the doing of God's will from his early
  • speaker
childhood. The significance of our sacrament of
  • speaker
    baptism will be made
  • speaker
understandable and personal through the experience of Jesus with John the
  • speaker
Baptist. The ministry of Jesus will be shown in a way that will help
  • speaker
the children to understand that his mission was to announce the good news of
  • speaker
    God's
  • speaker
rule. The opposition to Jesus will be pointed out in order
  • speaker
that children can understand that today too there are forces
  • speaker
    opposing right.
  • speaker
They must learn to be strong enough to combat
  • speaker
these. Jesus was more concerned about
  • speaker
    serving than being
  • speaker
served. Jesus had compassion for all
  • speaker
    people in
  • speaker
need. The hands of Christ are still active to heal the
  • speaker
wounds and spiritual sicknesses of men. His
  • speaker
forgiving love included even people who were
  • speaker
    despised. Jesus chose God's
  • speaker
way even when it was hard. He
  • speaker
said, "Not my will but thine be done."
  • speaker
    Jesus gave his
  • speaker
life that we might know the power of God's forgiving
  • speaker
love which overcomes evil in our lives.
  • speaker
But Jesus rose again because he was victorious even over
  • speaker
death. And, he commissioned his followers to go and make disciples
  • speaker
    of all
  • speaker
nations and left with us the promise
  • speaker
"Lo. I am with you always to the end of the
  • speaker
    age." [instrumental interlude]
  • speaker
    As
  • speaker
    the
  • speaker
meeting continued, the parents were told that the faculty used group teaching
  • speaker
methods, eliminating the hazard of a Sunday school situation which
  • speaker
might deteriorate into a one man
  • speaker
show. There is given to every boy and girl
  • speaker
the feeling of being a necessary part of the
  • speaker
church in participating and contributing to the group.
  • speaker
    It soon becomes
  • speaker
their class. Their department. Their church.
  • speaker
They were told how group teaching adds interest and depth to the church school
  • speaker
hour. Three or four adults share the responsibility of teaching
  • speaker
    twenty-five to thirty
  • speaker
children. And, they vary their duties in the department from one Sunday
  • speaker
    to
  • speaker
another. They alternate with such things
  • speaker
as guiding children with their worship
  • speaker
    services, discussing the week's
  • speaker
    lesson, becoming familiar with the
  • speaker
Bible, planning their outreach programs, and
  • speaker
doing research work in the Bible and reference books to give background to
  • speaker
    their
  • speaker
discussions. Constant reference to the children's
  • speaker
daily experience brings a Christian way of life closer to them. They are guided
  • speaker
to understand and apply these lessons to their own
  • speaker
lives. Janet and Phil began to understand what the church
  • speaker
was trying to do, to communicate
  • speaker
to every mother and father the importance of families and the church
  • speaker
being partners in the business of leading our children to
  • speaker
Christ. If anyone understood the meaning of communication, it
  • speaker
    was
  • speaker
Phil. Every day in his work he tried to get through to his customers and clients.
  • speaker
He had to admit it This church was getting through to
  • speaker
him. The family and the church must
  • speaker
understand together what we want for our young
  • speaker
people: commitment to Jesus Christ and lives founded on truly
  • speaker
Christian principles. This cannot be done well if we work
  • speaker
separately. At the close of the meeting, the young parents
  • speaker
promised along with all the other parents that they would try to help their children day by day to grow in
  • speaker
    the Christian
  • speaker
    faith.
  • speaker
    [instrumental interlude]
  • speaker
    old.
  • speaker
    Janet
  • speaker
    and
  • speaker
    Phil
  • speaker
began to realize that this church wanted much more of them than they had
  • speaker
guessed. It wasn't enough to have registered their children in the church school.
  • speaker
Nor did their attending the orientation meeting mean that they could simply go home and be done
  • speaker
with it. This church wanted them as partners in the training of
  • speaker
their small Martha and rapidly maturing
  • speaker
Mike. The very next day Martha's church school
  • speaker
teacher phoned. "Just calling to tell you we were glad to have Martha in our class.
  • speaker
Does she like her reading books?"
  • speaker
    Oh she loves it.
  • speaker
We've read it several times already. Mike is supposed to read a little out of his
  • speaker
    book every day too isn't
  • speaker
he? Yes. He should be reading it and it is also important
  • speaker
to read the Bible every day. I know in our family we have found a
  • speaker
    Bible Commentary very helpful
  • speaker
    too.
  • speaker
Phil and Janet recalled their promise at the parent meetings and began to study. They read
  • speaker
the articles in the front of the quarterly magazines.
  • speaker
    They got out their
  • speaker
Bible and borrowed a commentary from the church library. They took
  • speaker
time to read Martha's stories to her. And did their best to answer Mike's questions.
  • speaker
There were many things they decided that the whole family could do to make the children's experience at
  • speaker
    church more
  • speaker
meaningful. One hour weekly that Martha and Mike spent at the church school had to
  • speaker
    be
  • speaker
supplemented. Phil would have more father and son outings with
  • speaker
Mike. For we teach the love of Jesus by the love we show our
  • speaker
children. There would be additional time for
  • speaker
family fun planned with an eye to the children's enjoyment and their own too.
  • speaker
They would pray together as a family. They would begin by saying grace at meal
  • speaker
time to thank God for the love
  • speaker
he expresses for us in His care of our daily
  • speaker
needs. Thank you for the world so sweet.
  • speaker
Thank you for the food we eat. Thank you for the birds
  • speaker
sing. Thank you, God, for everything.
  • speaker
Amen. Phil and Janet, Martha and Mike, grew closer as the days passed. Their partnership with God
  • speaker
and the church became more important and precious to
  • speaker
them. After being up late on Saturday
  • speaker
night, it was sometimes hard to make
  • speaker
it, but they would go to church and church school as a family.
  • speaker
They had so much to be thankful
  • speaker
    for.
  • speaker
The peace of God which passeth all understanding keep your hearts
  • speaker
    and minds through Christ
  • speaker
Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God
  • speaker
and the communion of the Holy
  • speaker
Spirit be with you all. Amen. Phil now saw the church leading
  • speaker
him and his family toward the most worthwhile goals of his life:
  • speaker
learning, giving, praying, sharing, growing in the Christian way.
  • speaker
There was no question about it. The young parents had found their church home. They had become part of
  • speaker
    the
  • speaker
church. And our whole life is different
  • speaker
because we are in partnership with the
  • speaker
    church. [organ music]
