- speakerIt
- speakeris my privilege on behalf of the session of our San Marino Community Church to
- speakeremphasize the basic need which brings us
- speakertogether. In brief that need is this. We
- speakerwho try to provide Christian education for the boys and girls of this
- speakercommunity know that we are voices in the wilderness unless we
- speakerare echoing here at the church what is being taught by word and attitude
- speakerand action at
- speakerhome. If you prefer to take the long chance that
- speakersomehow something may happen, regardless of what you do at
- speakerhome, that is your
- speakerresponsibility. We insist however that you hear us
- speakerstate our position, for we know from experience, both happy
- speakerand
- speakersad that unless we enter an
- speakerunderstanding positive and joyful partnership with the
- speakerparents, we are working against odds which only God
- speakerHimself can overcome. It was a church school superintendent Ralph
- speakerN. MacIntyre of Topeka,
- speakerKansas, who documented how church loyalty is recapitulated in
- speakerthe children of our church homes. He made a study of
- speakerseven hundred church school pupils under age twenty who dropped
- speakerout of the church school
- speakerfor other than good reasons. Of that number,
- speakeronly three
- speakerwere children of parents who were active church members. On
- speakerthe other hand. Professor Paul Veith [Veith, Paul Herman, 1895-1978] of Yale University Divinity
- speakerSchool reports that more than ninety percent of those unite with the
- speakerchurch come from homes whose fathers and mothers are participating church
- speakermembers. Nearly every Protestant denomination
- speakernow relates its church school curriculum, in greater or lesser extent, to the
- speakerhome. Slowly they are returning to that pattern of the
- speakerReformation days when the Christian education of children was centered by the
- speakerhearth side.
- speakerMartin Luther, who constructed his catechism to be taught by parents,
- speakerwas convinced in his words that the home is
- speakerthe God ordained place for training in Christian
- speakercharacter, a thousand times better suited for this purpose
- speakerthan artificial monasteries as a minister. I
- speakerwish often that I were in the kind of institution which could require parents to
- speakerbe present with their children somewhere at the
- speakerchurch every Lord's
- speakerDay. We want you to be under
- speakerno illusion about what we hope will happen here.
- speakerThe Christian Faith and Life Curriculum, which we
- speakeruse, is a program for church and
- speakerhome. Each word in that title is
- speakersignificant. "Christian." This involves and should
- speakerresult in our commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and
- speakerSavior. "Faith." By the grace of God we
- speakercan respond to
- speakerhis call and ought to. And, "Life."
- speakerThis response to the will of God is for the whole of our lives. And, we
- speakermust seek to do His will in everyday living.
- speakerA program involving persons and materials
- speakerwith plans for making Christian
- speakerdisciples. For church a total
- speakereducational program in which the Sunday church school
- speakerprovides training and experience for which the final goal is
- speakerChristian discipleship and membership in the
- speakerchurch and
- speakerhome. In God's plan there is no substitute for
- speakerparents in guiding the growth of their children in the Christian
- speakerfaith. The home is truly the first place for
- speakerChristian nurture. The purpose of the curriculum is to guide
- speakerevery person to Jesus Christ so that, through him, they
- speakermay come to a true knowledge of God and to a living
- speakerfaith, and through the power of the Holy Spirit live as Christ's
- speakerdisciples in the fellowship of the
- speakerchurch. This is what we mean. And
- speakerwe invite you to share in what is the most important phase of your
- speakerchild's education. Because, if all
- speakerthis happens as God plans
- speakerit, what we teach together at
- speakerhome and at the
- speakerchurch will become your child's and, we pray,
- speakeryour
- speakerfaith and life, your Christian
- speakerfaith and
- speakerlife. [Organ plays hymn "O God, Our Help in Ages Past."]
- speakerThis
- speakerpresentation was planned by the Home and Church Committee of the San Marino Community Church, a
- speakerPresbyterian
- speakerChurch. The original script with written by Mrs Tyler Oven.
- speakerAnd, credit should be given to others for help for revisions.
- speakerMr RAY Bergstrom was chiefly responsible for the photography with the help and direction of Miss
- speakerGertrude
- speakerHarvard. And, we are deeply indebted to Bill Peters as our
- speakerrecording engineer.
- speakerMr
- speakerand Mrs Young Parent, Janet and
- speakerPhil and their children, four year old Martha and twelve year old
- speakerMike, were living in the neighborhood of the San Marino Community Church.
- speakerJanet had felt a pressing need for becoming a part of a church. She wanted her children to learn to
- speakerfeel this need
- speakertoo. It has not been easy to express this to
- speakerher husband
- speakerPhil. Like many people, Phil felt pretty
- speakeradequate within himself. He had never consciously felt
- speakerthe kind of need Janet experienced so keenly. His life was full of responsibilities,
- speakerthe demands of his business and forced routine and the need for earning a
- speakerliving.
- speakerone day Janet
- speakersaid. "Phil, we've gone on our own long enough. I think
- speakerit is important for the children to go to Sunday School
- speakernow." "Important! Oh, no! I don't think it's
- speakerimportant at
- speakerall." So, on the following
- speakerSunday, they visited the nearest church.
- speaker[Organ plays "Fairest Lord Jesus.]
- speakerThey explored the children's
- speakerbuilding, noting the facilities for preschool children,
- speakerthe kindergarten,
- speakerthe second grade, the fourth
- speakergrade. In every room Janet and
- speakerPhil were pleased with the cheerful environment.
- speakerThe new youth building was next on their
- speakertour. "What a perfect place for Mike, when
- speakerhe becomes a teenager to join his friends and enjoy real fun and
- speakerfellowship. And, maybe he could join a youth
- speakerchoir." They noticed a glassed in bulletin
- speakerboard with snapshots of one hundred and seventy five church school teachers,
- speakerall volunteer
- speakerworkers. " Hmm. Lots of working members in this
- speakerchurch. That's good."
- speakerJust notice how many men are teaching. That doesn't begin to number all
- speakerthe people who are at work
- speakerhere. In the sanctuary,
- speakerJanet looked up at the breathtaking beauty of the benediction window. And, she knew that Phil
- speakertoo was moved by its simplicity and
- speakersplendor.
- speakerThe next Sunday they decided to go back. They went to the office to register
- speakertheir
- speakerchildren. At the registration
- speakerdesk, they filled out their first time registration form and paid their tuition for the
- speakerfamily. The registrar
- speakersaid, "This goes toward the cost of the whole year's Christian
- speakereducation
- speakerexpenses." The registrar added that the board of elders or
- speakersession ruled that parents are expected to attend a parent
- speakermeeting.
- speakerThe mother ahead of them had
- speakerprotested, "What again? I attended one last year. I don't
- speakerhave time to go again."
- speakerYes. the parents are expected to attend at least one meeting each year as a part of
- speakertheir children's registration for church
- speakerschool. Their predecessor in line had seemed a little miffed.
- speakerBut businessman Phil took it in his
- speakerstride. Rules are rules. And who knows? I
- speakermay learn something. Keep that open mind.
- speakerLet's see what was that meeting
- speakerdate. The young parents had made a good decision
- speakertoday. The family had come to church
- speakertogether.
- speakerLater
- speakerthat day Phil tried to explain to a friend why he had to change his plans for the night of the parent
- speakermeeting. You fellows will never miss me. No. It's
- speakera meeting for parents. No. I think the church does have a right to expect us to
- speakercome to just one meeting. Oh well you get along without me.
- speakerYeah I made up my
- speakermind. See you later.
- speakerGoodbye.
- speakerDon't say a word, my dear. You know I agree with you, but I'm glad to see you're
- speakerbeginning to be convinced
- speakeryourself.
- speaker[instrumental interlude.]
- speaker[Choral anthem with brass, "Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past"]
- speakerAt
- speakerthe parent meeting, Janet and Phil were given their
- speakermaterials. They were the new parent teacher magazine published every
- speakerthree
- speakermonths" Growing. Opening Doors.
- speakerDiscovery. possible in This
- speakerGeneration. The registrar told
- speakerthem. You should try to read at least one magazine each quarter. There is a
- speakerlesson for every Sunday in the quarter and if a child should be absent for any
- speakerreason, the parent can help him at home.
- speakerActually there are study guides in the Faith and Life
- speakercurriculum for pre-three children through senior adult.
- speakerThe reading books for the children will be given out at church school. But these copies are here
- speakerfor display. There are simple and beautifully illustrated stories for preschool
- speakerchildren and those in grades one, two and three.
- speakerAnd well written and interesting books for fourth graders through high school. The parents were told that they
- speakertoo should read the books that each of their children
- speakerreceived. They were told that in the Faith and Life
- speakercurriculum everyone will be studying the life of Christ this year,
- speakereach on his own level.
- speakerWell take for example a second grader. Will he be studying the life of Christ
- speakerthis year? Yes. And, when he comes back to this scene in three years in the
- speakerfifth grade, he will be studying it on a more mature level.
- speakerI see. I suppose he'll study it again the next time in the eighth grade.
- speakerThat's right with a still different emphasis, particularly stressing the
- speakeryoung person's relationship to
- speakerJesus. The
- speakerteaching material is planned to rotate on a three-year cycle around the
- speakerthemes of Christ, the Bible, and the church. This will include all
- speakerages from preschool through senior adult. If you miss a Sunday, you
- speakernever come back to the same material in the same way again.
- speakerWell then it's important for the family to follow along at home.
- speakerYes. Or at least create the kind of climate in the home where it is natural
- speakerfor the family to discuss religious questions.
- speakerPhil thought.
- speakerWell this is no hit and miss program for Christian an
- speakereducation.
- speakerOne year of the curriculum is devoted to the study of the Bible
- speakerto awaken our faith in Christ. Last year
- speakerwe studied the growth of the church from the time of Christ down through the work of
- speakerthe Reformation leaders, such as John
- speakerCalvin, to the present day spread of the gospel around the
- speakerworld.
- speakerThis
- speakeryear we are concerned with the events and experiences in the life of our Lord Jesus
- speakerChrist, who he is, what he
- speakerdoes, and with bringing our children into a real relationship with
- speakerHim. The children will learn that the Jewish people had
- speakerwaited long for the promised Messiah. Christian faith sees
- speakerin Christ one who was human as we
- speakerare and yet was
- speakerGod. They will discover that the boy Jesus was
- speakerdedicated to the doing of God's will from his early
- speakerchildhood. The significance of our sacrament of
- speakerbaptism will be made
- speakerunderstandable and personal through the experience of Jesus with John the
- speakerBaptist. The ministry of Jesus will be shown in a way that will help
- speakerthe children to understand that his mission was to announce the good news of
- speakerGod's
- speakerrule. The opposition to Jesus will be pointed out in order
- speakerthat children can understand that today too there are forces
- speakeropposing right.
- speakerThey must learn to be strong enough to combat
- speakerthese. Jesus was more concerned about
- speakerserving than being
- speakerserved. Jesus had compassion for all
- speakerpeople in
- speakerneed. The hands of Christ are still active to heal the
- speakerwounds and spiritual sicknesses of men. His
- speakerforgiving love included even people who were
- speakerdespised. Jesus chose God's
- speakerway even when it was hard. He
- speakersaid, "Not my will but thine be done."
- speakerJesus gave his
- speakerlife that we might know the power of God's forgiving
- speakerlove which overcomes evil in our lives.
- speakerBut Jesus rose again because he was victorious even over
- speakerdeath. And, he commissioned his followers to go and make disciples
- speakerof all
- speakernations and left with us the promise
- speaker"Lo. I am with you always to the end of the
- speakerage." [instrumental interlude]
- speakerAs
- speakerthe
- speakermeeting continued, the parents were told that the faculty used group teaching
- speakermethods, eliminating the hazard of a Sunday school situation which
- speakermight deteriorate into a one man
- speakershow. There is given to every boy and girl
- speakerthe feeling of being a necessary part of the
- speakerchurch in participating and contributing to the group.
- speakerIt soon becomes
- speakertheir class. Their department. Their church.
- speakerThey were told how group teaching adds interest and depth to the church school
- speakerhour. Three or four adults share the responsibility of teaching
- speakertwenty-five to thirty
- speakerchildren. And, they vary their duties in the department from one Sunday
- speakerto
- speakeranother. They alternate with such things
- speakeras guiding children with their worship
- speakerservices, discussing the week's
- speakerlesson, becoming familiar with the
- speakerBible, planning their outreach programs, and
- speakerdoing research work in the Bible and reference books to give background to
- speakertheir
- speakerdiscussions. Constant reference to the children's
- speakerdaily experience brings a Christian way of life closer to them. They are guided
- speakerto understand and apply these lessons to their own
- speakerlives. Janet and Phil began to understand what the church
- speakerwas trying to do, to communicate
- speakerto every mother and father the importance of families and the church
- speakerbeing partners in the business of leading our children to
- speakerChrist. If anyone understood the meaning of communication, it
- speakerwas
- speakerPhil. Every day in his work he tried to get through to his customers and clients.
- speakerHe had to admit it This church was getting through to
- speakerhim. The family and the church must
- speakerunderstand together what we want for our young
- speakerpeople: commitment to Jesus Christ and lives founded on truly
- speakerChristian principles. This cannot be done well if we work
- speakerseparately. At the close of the meeting, the young parents
- speakerpromised along with all the other parents that they would try to help their children day by day to grow in
- speakerthe Christian
- speakerfaith.
- speaker[instrumental interlude]
- speakerold.
- speakerJanet
- speakerand
- speakerPhil
- speakerbegan to realize that this church wanted much more of them than they had
- speakerguessed. It wasn't enough to have registered their children in the church school.
- speakerNor did their attending the orientation meeting mean that they could simply go home and be done
- speakerwith it. This church wanted them as partners in the training of
- speakertheir small Martha and rapidly maturing
- speakerMike. The very next day Martha's church school
- speakerteacher phoned. "Just calling to tell you we were glad to have Martha in our class.
- speakerDoes she like her reading books?"
- speakerOh she loves it.
- speakerWe've read it several times already. Mike is supposed to read a little out of his
- speakerbook every day too isn't
- speakerhe? Yes. He should be reading it and it is also important
- speakerto read the Bible every day. I know in our family we have found a
- speakerBible Commentary very helpful
- speakertoo.
- speakerPhil and Janet recalled their promise at the parent meetings and began to study. They read
- speakerthe articles in the front of the quarterly magazines.
- speakerThey got out their
- speakerBible and borrowed a commentary from the church library. They took
- speakertime to read Martha's stories to her. And did their best to answer Mike's questions.
- speakerThere were many things they decided that the whole family could do to make the children's experience at
- speakerchurch more
- speakermeaningful. One hour weekly that Martha and Mike spent at the church school had to
- speakerbe
- speakersupplemented. Phil would have more father and son outings with
- speakerMike. For we teach the love of Jesus by the love we show our
- speakerchildren. There would be additional time for
- speakerfamily fun planned with an eye to the children's enjoyment and their own too.
- speakerThey would pray together as a family. They would begin by saying grace at meal
- speakertime to thank God for the love
- speakerhe expresses for us in His care of our daily
- speakerneeds. Thank you for the world so sweet.
- speakerThank you for the food we eat. Thank you for the birds
- speakersing. Thank you, God, for everything.
- speakerAmen. Phil and Janet, Martha and Mike, grew closer as the days passed. Their partnership with God
- speakerand the church became more important and precious to
- speakerthem. After being up late on Saturday
- speakernight, it was sometimes hard to make
- speakerit, but they would go to church and church school as a family.
- speakerThey had so much to be thankful
- speakerfor.
- speakerThe peace of God which passeth all understanding keep your hearts
- speakerand minds through Christ
- speakerJesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God
- speakerand the communion of the Holy
- speakerSpirit be with you all. Amen. Phil now saw the church leading
- speakerhim and his family toward the most worthwhile goals of his life:
- speakerlearning, giving, praying, sharing, growing in the Christian way.
- speakerThere was no question about it. The young parents had found their church home. They had become part of
- speakerthe
- speakerchurch. And our whole life is different
- speakerbecause we are in partnership with the
- speakerchurch. [organ music]
