- Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations relief in the Congo.
- Description
- Congo, February 1961 - One outstanding and reassuring feature of the confused situation in the Congo has been the prompt and generous response of governments in all parts of the world to the appeal of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for food supplies and materials for the relief of the famine in South Kasai. Large quantities of maise, rice, dried milk, dried fish and palm oil are the main food stuffs so far contributed by more than 20 countries. FAO has also purchased supplies of fertilisers and seeds together with hoes and bush knives to enable the refugees to prepare the ground and now crops immediately. The transport of these food stuffs and equipment and their distribution is arranged between FAO and the United Nations. Sacks of maize seed provided by FAO are unloaded at Dilinga, South Kasai.

- Kasai, Republic of the Congo - 10 August 1960. Some 11,500 soldiers from nine countries are now on duty with the U.N. Force in the Republic of the Congo, helping to restore order ad calm in the country. Assistance also includes technical and medical personnel, air transport, food, heavy materials and various supplies. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31830 MISSIONARY SENTENCED TO DEATH IN CONGO NEW YORK -- Dr. Paul Carlson, an American Protestant medical missionary, has been sentenced to death by the rebel Stanleyville government on charges of spying for the Congo central government. He is shown here during the summer of 1964 presenting corn and eggs to a native in a Congo village. At right is another American missionary, Dr. Philip Littleford of Baltimore. Dr. Carlson, 36, comes from Rolling Hills, Cal., and has been serving in the Congo under the Evangelical Covenant Church of America. Both the State Department and the Pentagon have denied that he has any military connection. Secretary of State Dean Rusk appealed to Premier Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya to do all he can to halt the threatened execution. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11C-64-NAB)

- Title
- Mission doctor cited by Jaycees.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32004 MISSION DOCTOR CITED BY JAYCEES TULSA, Okla. -- Dr. Daniel E. Fountain, 34, an American Baptist medical missionary in the Congo, was cited as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of 1964 by the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce in Tulsa. He is shown removing an arrow from the back of a Congolese Army soldier in Vanga who had been ambushed by rebels. Vanga, largest Protestant mission station in the Congo, is located in the Kwilu Province, where rebels have been active for about a year. However, they have not penetrated the area surrounding the mission. Dr. Fountain, son of a Baptist minister, is now in the U.S. where he is studying eye surgery at Willis Eye Hospital, Philadelphia.
