- Rescued Congo missionary recounts experience.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30549 RESCUED CONGO MISSIONARY RECOUNTS EXPERIENCE LEOPOLDVILLE, Congo -- Details of a narrow escape from death are recounted at Leopoldville, Congo, by Miss Ruth Hege, 58, of Wellington, Ohio, who was hit in the arm during an arrow attack that killed her companion, Miss Irene Ferrel, 42, of Jerome, Idaho. Both women were assigned to the Baptist Mid-Missions station at Mangungu, in the heart of the area attacked by anti-government terrorists. Miss Hege, later evacuated by helicopter, was left for dead after being struck by the arrow. In a transcontinental telephone conversation with Baptist Mid-Missions headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, the veteran of 30 years of missionary service, many of them in Africa, said she planned to return to the U.S. "There is no future here," she said. "Conditions are chaotic...I don't want to return to the Congo." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-1E-64-NBM)

A co-worker at the Baptist Aid Station in Kwilu Province, Miss Ruth B. Hege, 57, of Wellington, Ohio (right) was reported hospitalized after rebels hacked her hands off. - Song After Sorrow, 1938, part 2.
- Description
- "Song After Sorrow" (1938) was a dramatized documentary of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. Congo Mission work among lepers at Bibanga. Virginia and Ray Garner, of the Africa Motion Picture Project, arrived at Bibanga in late 1938 just as Eugene Kellersberger was preparing to relocate the mission's leprosarium. A portion of the film depicts, as Virginia wrote in her diary of August 23, 1938, "homeless lepers en route [...] The ones without feet rode in carts, the women carried baskets on their heads, and the crippled hobbled along with sticks. It really was quite a scene and should be very effective." [Cf. Glenn Reynolds, "Images out of Africa : the Virginia Garner diaries of the Africa Motion Picture Project," 2011.] This is a 1990s transfer to VHS, likely provided to PHS-Montreat by the Medical Benevolence Foundation.

Miss Irene Ferrel of Jerome, Idaho, died when a poisoned arrow hit her in the face. Her sister, Mrs. Winifred Grings, right, escaped injury in the nightmarish week. Mrs. Grings, shown here with her husband, Robert, and children, and Miss Ferrel both were missionaries for Baptist Mid-Missions of Cleveland, Ohio, an independent agency supported by the General Conference of Regular Baptist Churches. The Grings, together with three other missionaries at the Iwungu mission station -- 50 miles from the station where Miss Ferrel died -- were flown by United Nations helicopter to Leopoldville. Dr. Carlson was a 1949 graduate of the college’s two-year program and served in the Congo for the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, which owns and operates the college. North Park President Karl A. Olsson, announcing the memorial, said that “students who attend classes in the Carlson Tower will be reminded of the Christian Gospel for which Paul E. Carlson lived and died and which has moved other missionaries to give themselves to the world in selfless devotion.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (NP-CI-2B-65-NBM)

The Italian nuns are members of the Missionary Sisters of Verona. Other missionaries, including priest and Sisters, were in the general audience of some 1,000 persons in the Vatican’s Hall of Benedictions. The Pope has often paid tribute to the martyrdom of missionaries in the Congo and has made many pleas for peace in the new African nation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-1A-65-NAB)
