- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31862 SAFE FROM CONGOLESE REBELS LEOPOLDVILLE -- Wrapped in a blanket, a small girl is carried by an American Protestant missionary as they leave plane in Leopoldville after flight from Stanleyville. The girl and Alfred Larson of East Islip, N.Y., a missionary of the Unevangelized Field Mission, were among American and European hostages rescued from Congo rebels by Belgian paratroopers and armed forces of the Congo central government. At least 50 whites, including missionaries, were reported massacred by the rebels as rescuing forces were on their way. Before boarding the plane, Mr. Larson, 36, led his wife, daughter and a group of Americans, Britons and Greeks to safety. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11D-64-NAB)

- United Nations assistance in the Congo.
- Description
- Kasai, Republic of the Congo - 10 August 1960. Some 11,500 soldiers from nine countries are now on duty with the U.N. Force in the Republic of the Congo, helping to restore order ad calm in the country. Assistance also includes technical and medical personnel, air transport, food, heavy materials and various supplies. For example, a food distribution was organized for the victims of the intertribal fight between the Luluas and Balubas in Kasai province. The food was sent by U.N. cargo aircraft from Leopoldville to Luluebourg, provincial capital of Kasai. Here, the food packages have been unloaded from the U.N. plane by Tunisian troops of the U.N. Force.

- Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations relief in the Congo.
- Description
- Congo, February 1961 - One outstanding and reassuring feature of the confused situation in the Congo has been the prompt and generous response of governments in all parts of the world to the appeal of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for food supplies and materials for the relief of the famine in South Kasai. Large quantities of maise, rice, dried milk, dried fish and palm oil are the main food stuffs so far contributed by more than 20 countries. FAO has also purchased supplies of fertilisers and seeds together with hoes and bush knives to enable the refugees to prepare the ground and now crops immediately. The transport of these food stuffs and equipment and their distribution is arranged between FAO and the United Nations. Sacks of maize seed provided by FAO are unloaded at Dilinga, South Kasai.
