- Congo missionaries safely home.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30566 CONGO MISSIONARIES SAFELY HOME TALLMADGE, Ohio -- The clothes on their back and a souvenir spear were all the Rev. and Mrs. Harold Mullins and their four children could bring out of the Kwilu Province in the Congo, where anti-government terrorists burned their mission station and threatened their lives. The Baptist couple, with their 16-month-old baby, hid upstairs in their house but fire forced Mr. Mullins to knock out a window and jump. The baby was dropped to him as Mrs. Mullins also jumped to safety. The clergyman was knocked down and hit with a hammer in a brief fracas with terrorists. None of the youngsters was harmed. The life of another missionary was saved, Mr. Mullins related, when a former native Bible student jumped in front of a terrorist aiming a rifle. United Nations helicopters evacuated the group. The Italian nuns are members of the Missionary Sisters of Verona. Other missionaries, including priest and Sisters, were in the general audience of some 1,000 persons in the Vatican’s Hall of Benedictions. The Pope has often paid tribute to the martyrdom of missionaries in the Congo and has made many pleas for peace in the new African nation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-1A-65-NAB)

- New Methodist bishops in Africa.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31559 NEW METHODIST BISHOPS IN AFRICA NEW YORK -- For the first time in the 131-year history of Methodist work in Africa, two Africans have been elected bishops. They were among four chosen by the quadrennial Methodist Africa Central Conference. The bishops are: top, Bishop Ralph E. Dodge, an American, who was re-elected and assigned to Southern Rhodesia (left); and Bishop John Wesley Shungu, financial officer and legal representative of the Central Congo Methodist Conference, assigned to the Congo. Bottom: Bishop Harry P. Andreassen, a Norwegian missionary from Trondheim, assigned to Angola, where he has served since 1952 (left); and Bishop Escrivao Zunguze, pastor of the Methodist church at Cambini, Mozambique, assigned to Mozambique and South Africa. Bishop Dodge, an outspoken foe of racial discrimination, formerly headed work in South Africa, Angola and Mozambique, besides Southern Rhodesia. In July he was expelled from Southern Rhodesia on grounds that he was an "undesirable immigrant," and has been staying in Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia.
