- Congo medical missionary reported dead.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31851 CONGO MEDICAL MISSIONARY REPORTED DEAD LEOPOLDVILLE, the Congo -- Refugees escaping from rebel-held territory in the Congo reported that Dr. Paul Carlson (right), shown here in a happier moment, had been put to death. The medical missionary, serving under the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, was captured when he refused to leave his hospital in the northern Congo. His wife (right) and children, Wayne, 9, and Lynette, 6, (in the foreground) reached safety. The doctor’s threatened execution, after being charged as a spy by rebels, was delayed for one week after the U.S. State Department and churchmen in America urged Kenya Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta, as chairman of a Special Organization of African Unity Committee, to intervene in his behalf. The Carlson family is shown here with Philip Littleford of Baltimore, Md., a medical student in Africa on a fellowship, and Joann LeVahn of Minneapolis, Minn., a staff nurse at the mission hospital. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30566 CONGO MISSIONARIES SAFELY HOME TALLMADGE, Ohio -- The clothes on their back and a souvenir spear were all the Rev. and Mrs. Harold Mullins and their four children could bring out of the Kwilu Province in the Congo, where anti-government terrorists burned their mission station and threatened their lives. The Baptist couple, with their 16-month-old baby, hid upstairs in their house but fire forced Mr. Mullins to knock out a window and jump. The baby was dropped to him as Mrs. Mullins also jumped to safety. The clergyman was knocked down and hit with a hammer in a brief fracas with terrorists. None of the youngsters was harmed. The life of another missionary was saved, Mr. Mullins related, when a former native Bible student jumped in front of a terrorist aiming a rifle. United Nations helicopters evacuated the group. - Rescued Congo missionary recounts experience.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30549 RESCUED CONGO MISSIONARY RECOUNTS EXPERIENCE LEOPOLDVILLE, Congo -- Details of a narrow escape from death are recounted at Leopoldville, Congo, by Miss Ruth Hege, 58, of Wellington, Ohio, who was hit in the arm during an arrow attack that killed her companion, Miss Irene Ferrel, 42, of Jerome, Idaho. Both women were assigned to the Baptist Mid-Missions station at Mangungu, in the heart of the area attacked by anti-government terrorists. Miss Hege, later evacuated by helicopter, was left for dead after being struck by the arrow. In a transcontinental telephone conversation with Baptist Mid-Missions headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, the veteran of 30 years of missionary service, many of them in Africa, said she planned to return to the U.S. "There is no future here," she said. "Conditions are chaotic...I don't want to return to the Congo." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-1E-64-NBM)

- Title
- Song After Sorrow, 1938, part 2.
- Description
- "Song After Sorrow" (1938) was a dramatized documentary of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. Congo Mission work among lepers at Bibanga. Virginia and Ray Garner, of the Africa Motion Picture Project, arrived at Bibanga in late 1938 just as Eugene Kellersberger was preparing to relocate the mission's leprosarium. A portion of the film depicts, as Virginia wrote in her diary of August 23, 1938, "homeless lepers en route [...] The ones without feet rode in carts, the women carried baskets on their heads, and the crippled hobbled along with sticks. It really was quite a scene and should be very effective." [Cf. Glenn Reynolds, "Images out of Africa : the Virginia Garner diaries of the Africa Motion Picture Project," 2011.] This is a 1990s transfer to VHS, likely provided to PHS-Montreat by the Medical Benevolence Foundation.

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30535 SLAIN CONGO MISSIONARY'S SISTER AND FAMILY RESCUED LEOPOLDVILLE, Congo -- One of two Baptist missionary sisters died and another was saved from Communist-inspired terrorists in the Kwilu Province of the Congo. Miss Irene Ferrel of Jerome, Idaho, died when a poisoned arrow hit her in the face. Her sister, Mrs. Winifred Grings, right, escaped injury in the nightmarish week. Mrs. Grings, shown here with her husband, Robert, and children, and Miss Ferrel both were missionaries for Baptist Mid-Missions of Cleveland, Ohio, an independent agency supported by the General Conference of Regular Baptist Churches. The Grings, together with three other missionaries at the Iwungu mission station -- 50 miles from the station where Miss Ferrel died -- were flown by United Nations helicopter to Leopoldville. The Grings children, left to right, are Becky, 8; Danny, 6; and Ruth Ann, 11. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1E-64-NBM)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31559 NEW METHODIST BISHOPS IN AFRICA NEW YORK -- For the first time in the 131-year history of Methodist work in Africa, two Africans have been elected bishops. They were among four chosen by the quadrennial Methodist Africa Central Conference. The bishops are: top, Bishop Ralph E. Dodge, an American, who was re-elected and assigned to Southern Rhodesia (left); and Bishop John Wesley Shungu, financial officer and legal representative of the Central Congo Methodist Conference, assigned to the Congo. Bottom: Bishop Harry P. Andreassen, a Norwegian missionary from Trondheim, assigned to Angola, where he has served since 1952 (left); and Bishop Escrivao Zunguze, pastor of the Methodist church at Cambini, Mozambique, assigned to Mozambique and South Africa. Bishop Dodge, an outspoken foe of racial discrimination, formerly headed work in South Africa, Angola and Mozambique, besides Southern Rhodesia. In July he was expelled from Southern Rhodesia on grounds that he was an "undesirable immigrant," and has been staying in Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia.
