- Bishops' wives back integration: two jailed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30805 BISHOPS’ WIVES BACK INTEGRATION: TWO JAILED BOSTON -- Three wives of Protestant Episcopal bishops are shown as they boarded a plane in Boston enroute to Jacksonville, Fla., where they assisted in integration efforts. A Negro child wishes them bon voyage. Two of them were arrested in Jacksonville. At far right is Mrs. Malcolm Peabody, wife of the retired Episcopal Bishop of Central New York and mother of Massachusetts’ governor; she was arrested on March 31. At center is Mrs. John M. Burgess, wife of the Suffragan Bishop of Massachusetts and first Negro bishop of the Church in the U.S. Mrs. Burgess was jailed March 30 by Jacksonville police when she sought service in a motel cocktail lounge. At left is Mrs. D.J. Campbell, wife of the former Episcopal Bishop of Los Angeles. Mrs. Peabody, 72, said they took part in the segregation protest like any “three nice peaceful women.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-3D-64-W)

- Hattiesburg race effort continuing.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31238 HATTIESBURG RACE EFFORT CONTINUING HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Scenes of last January remained vivid in July, as the nation’s most comprehensive civil rights bill became law. Since minister, rabbis and Negroes of the community staged prolonged picketing in Hattiesburg, Miss., to protest voter registration practices an effort has been continued there on an interreligious, interracial basis to increase the number of registered Negro voters. The pattern of civil rights demonstrations across the nation is mirrored in the scenes here: a preparatory briefing in a local church (top left), prayer (top right) and petitioning God’s guidance through song, with hand’s linked to symbolize the united effort (bottom left) and peaceful picketing (bottom right). Local authorities, who initially permitted the demonstration within a specified area, later arrested nine United Presbyterian ministers and a Disciples of Christ clergyman on charges of disorderly conduct for having refused to follow police directions. - Delta Ministry posters.
- Description
- Hattiesburg, Miss.--Posters in the window of the Hattiesburg, Miss. offices of the National Council of Churches' Mississippi Delta Ministry call attention to various phases of the long-range relief, rehabilitation and education program among impoverished Negroes and whites. Hailed by many and criticized by others, largely for its encouragement of the Negro voter registration and efforts to organize laborers, the Ministry is the first such project in this country to receive support from the World Council of Churches. Headquartered in Greenville, Ministry centers also are maintained in Cleveland, Hattiesburg and McComb, Miss.

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30348 NCC DELEGATES PRESS FOR CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION PHILADELPHIA -- Two busloads of delegates and official visitors, a total of about 80 men and women, left the National Council of Churches’ triennial General Assembly at Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 6 for a one-day journey to Washington, D.C., to contact legislators and personally urge speedy passage of pending civil rights legislation. The trip followed Assembly approval of a resolution seeking accelerated Christian pressure on Congressmen to force the bill out of committee and onto the floor of the House of Representatives for debate. J. Irwin Miller, outgoing NCC president, (third from right, front row) greets Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop B. Julian Smith of Chicago and other travelers on their return to Philadelphia. Also welcoming the returning group (second from left) was Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race. Next to Bishop Smith, a vice chairman of the race commission, is Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman, special projects coordinator for the commission, and to her right is Dr. R.H. Edwin Espy, NCC general secretary. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (1-P-12B-63-NBM)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32069 WHITE SEGREGATIONIST ATTACKS DR. KING SELMA, Ala. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is confronted by a white segregationist outside the Dallas County Court House in Selma, Ala. The man later punched and kicked the noted Negro integration leader as he registered at a previously segregated hotel. The attacker was James Robinson, 26, of Birmingham, Ala., a member of the segregationist National States Rights Party. Police quickly seized Mr. Robinson and charged him with assault and disturbing the peace. Dr. King said later he was not hurt by the attack, suffering only a headache. The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner and leading advocate of the non-violent movement against discrimination was in Selma to assist a voter registration drive. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32321 SELMA MARCH UNDERWAY AT LONG LAST SELMA, Ala. -- This aerial view shows a half-mile long column of civil rights demonstrators -- including many clergy -- on the first leg of a 50-mile march to Montgomery, the state capital, in support of the Negro voter registration drive. The marchers -- an estimate 3,500 left Selma -- are shown crossing the Pettus Bridge, where the first scheduled freedom march was broken up by state troopers on Sunday, March 7. This time, the march was authorized by a federal court and was protected by Army and federalized Alabama National Guard troops. Leading the walk was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which has been spearheading the long registration effort. At the end of the five-day march along U.S. Highway 80, Negro leaders hoped to present a civil rights petition to Gov. George C. Wallace, who earlier declined to protect the demonstrators. The Mayor called for enactment of President Kennedy's civil rights proposals and pledged continuing efforts toward greater racial equality in New York City.
