- Latin Methodist: Synod of major interest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46086 LATIN METHODIST: SYNOD OF MAJOR INTEREST LA PAZ, Bolivia -- The Methodist Bishop of Bolivia is following the proceedings of the World Synod of Roman Catholic Bishops in Rome with more than cursory interest because the Synod's theme of evangelization "is especially significant for Latin America." “In reality," said Bishop Mortimer Arias, "this is an ecumenical search, because all of us, Roman Catholics and Protestants, are searching for an effective theology of evangelization of man in Latin America -- a theology that will liberate, humanize and conscientize Christians." The 50-year-old bishop said he hopes the Synod will "come to grips” with the theology of liberation, the theology developed in Latin America which seeks to penetrate the controversial area where the Gospel is applied to questions of social justice. PAUL, Minn. -- American Indian Movement (AIM) leaders Russell Means (left) and Dennis Banks raise their arms in a victory gesture in St. Paul after U.S. District Judge Fred Nichol dismissed all charges against them for leading the 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, S.D., in 1973. The judge specifically blamed the dismissal on the refusal of the government to go with 11 jurors after one became ill on the second day of deliberations. The government indicated it might appeal the decision. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-SP-9C-74-DS)

Fifteen students were arrested after a hallway scuffle between black and white students. The school was then ordered closed for the day. Sporadic violence has erupted at Hyde Park since school opened in September under the controversial court-ordered busing plan. The school was closed in the Fall but an uneasy truce had existed between white and black students since before Christmas. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AA-BOS-1C-75-DS)

George Ogle, a United Methodist missionary, waves as he boards a plane in Seoul after he was ordered deported from South Korea for criticizing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. Forced to leave his wife and four children behind, the 45-year-old native of Pennsylvania was placed on a California-bound Korean jetliner by police. Deportation was ordered when the missionary, who had been in South Korea for 20 years, refused to retract comments critical of the Park government for its arrests of students, intellectuals and clergy who asked for a restoration of democracy. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30565 NEW YORK SCHOOL BOYCOTT KEEPS MANY OUT OF CLASS NEW YORK -- Many students went to class on schedule, but thousands of others observed a one-day boycott of all New York City schools to protest racial imbalance in the system. The demonstration was the largest of its kind ever held in the country, with 464, 361 students -- 44.8 percent of the total enrollment -- observing the boycott. Though "freedom song" renditions and shouting marked the march around schools, the picketing was orderly and unobstructed. Many of the boycotting students spent the day in "freedom schools" established mainly in local churches. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-2B-64-NBM)

Vernon Missionary Baptist church -- the 11th Negro church to be destroyed by fire in the state this summer and the second burned in the McComb area within five days. The 200-member Mr. Vernon church was organized in 1886. The widespread arson was seen as racist reaction to civil rights meetings in the Negro houses of worship. - Christmas service in new Mississippi church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31974 CHRISTMAS SERVICE IN NEW MISSISSIPPI CHURCH RIPLEY, Miss. -- A group of northern college students, calling themselves “Carpenters for Christmas,” paused with members of the congregation of the Negro Antioch Baptist church near Ripley, Miss., for Christmas services. The church, burned to the ground Oct. 30 after a civil rights rally was held there, was reconstructed during the holiday weeks by the volunteer student group. The paster of the congregation, the Rev. John R. McDonald, preaches the Christmas sermon to the church members and students, who later put the roof on the new structure and rushed to complete the interior before returning to their campuses. Most of the volunteer carpenters were from Oberlin (Ohio) College. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-12E-64-NBM)
