- Hattiesburg race effort continuing.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31238 HATTIESBURG RACE EFFORT CONTINUING HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Scenes of last January remained vivid in July, as the nation’s most comprehensive civil rights bill became law. Since minister, rabbis and Negroes of the community staged prolonged picketing in Hattiesburg, Miss., to protest voter registration practices an effort has been continued there on an interreligious, interracial basis to increase the number of registered Negro voters. The pattern of civil rights demonstrations across the nation is mirrored in the scenes here: a preparatory briefing in a local church (top left), prayer (top right) and petitioning God’s guidance through song, with hand’s linked to symbolize the united effort (bottom left) and peaceful picketing (bottom right). Local authorities, who initially permitted the demonstration within a specified area, later arrested nine United Presbyterian ministers and a Disciples of Christ clergyman on charges of disorderly conduct for having refused to follow police directions.
