- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29795 BLAST DAMAGES INTEGRATED SCHOOL BURAS, La. -- Our Lady of Good Harbor elementary school at Buras, La., which was boycotted last year by white pupils when it was integrated, has been heavily damaged by an explosion and fire. The parish pastor, Father Christopher Schneider, O.F.M., inspects the damage which shattered hopes for the school to be reopened this September. Investigators found three five-gallon gasoline cans on the roof of the school. One can still contained gasoline. A burned path about 50 feet long to the school indicated a fuse had been set and then lighted. Archbishop John P. Cody of New Orleans termed the blast “an outrage that must be deplored by every right-thinking person.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (NS-NO-8E-63-RB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45945 FORD SIGNS $25-BILLION SCHOOL BILL WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Ford signs the new aid to education bill, which provides $25.4-billion for elementary and high schools, during a ceremony at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare Building in Washington. After signing the bill, Mr. Ford expressed disappointment that it did not include provisions for automatically re-evaluating existing court orders on busing. The bill carries a provision restricting the use of busing in desegregation plans. Federal courts, the new law says, cannot order the busing of a child beyond the school closest to his home or the next closest school unless such busing is necessary to protect the constitutional rights of minority children. However, cities already operating under court orders for more far reaching busing programs would not be affected. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RN-WAS-8D-74-DS)

- Latin Methodist: Synod of major interest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46086 LATIN METHODIST: SYNOD OF MAJOR INTEREST LA PAZ, Bolivia -- The Methodist Bishop of Bolivia is following the proceedings of the World Synod of Roman Catholic Bishops in Rome with more than cursory interest because the Synod's theme of evangelization "is especially significant for Latin America." “In reality," said Bishop Mortimer Arias, "this is an ecumenical search, because all of us, Roman Catholics and Protestants, are searching for an effective theology of evangelization of man in Latin America -- a theology that will liberate, humanize and conscientize Christians." The 50-year-old bishop said he hopes the Synod will "come to grips” with the theology of liberation, the theology developed in Latin America which seeks to penetrate the controversial area where the Gospel is applied to questions of social justice. PAUL, Minn. -- American Indian Movement (AIM) leaders Russell Means (left) and Dennis Banks raise their arms in a victory gesture in St. Paul after U.S. District Judge Fred Nichol dismissed all charges against them for leading the 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, S.D., in 1973. The judge specifically blamed the dismissal on the refusal of the government to go with 11 jurors after one became ill on the second day of deliberations. The government indicated it might appeal the decision. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-SP-9C-74-DS)

Fifteen students were arrested after a hallway scuffle between black and white students. The school was then ordered closed for the day. Sporadic violence has erupted at Hyde Park since school opened in September under the controversial court-ordered busing plan. The school was closed in the Fall but an uneasy truce had existed between white and black students since before Christmas. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AA-BOS-1C-75-DS)

- Description

George Ogle, a United Methodist missionary, waves as he boards a plane in Seoul after he was ordered deported from South Korea for criticizing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. Forced to leave his wife and four children behind, the 45-year-old native of Pennsylvania was placed on a California-bound Korean jetliner by police. Deportation was ordered when the missionary, who had been in South Korea for 20 years, refused to retract comments critical of the Park government for its arrests of students, intellectuals and clergy who asked for a restoration of democracy. - To be jailed for contempt.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45047 TO BE JAILED FOR CONTEMPT SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- A national executive of the American Lutheran Church (ALC), Dr. Paul A. Boe, has been ordered to jail for refusing to testify about what he saw and heard during 10 days spent last March in the Indian community of Wounded Knee, S.D. Dr. Boe claimed that the conversations he had with leaders of the American Indian Movement (AIM) during the confrontation there fell within a Clergy-penitent relationship and were therefore privileged. Judge Paul Benson, a lay member of an ALC church in Fargo, N.D., rejected the argument and held Dr. Boe in contempt of court. He ordered the ALC clergyman, who is executive director of the denomination's Division of Social Service, to the custody of the U.S. marshal in Sioux Falls for confinement in "a suitable place" until he is willing to testify before a grand jury.
