- Text transcribed from caption: P-30793 GERMAN CHURCHMAN LEADS WORSHIP FOR PRISONERS LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Inmates of the Federal Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., filled the auditorium to attend a mid-week Protestant Lenten service led by Dr. Martin Niemoeller (left), head of the Evangelical Church of Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and one of the six presidents of the World Council of Churches. The prominent German churchman, who spent seven years in concentration camps for his resistance to Hitler during World War II, gave the meditation and led a unison prayer which asked for the comfort and relief of “all those who are in any way afflicted or distressed in mind, body or estate…” He visited the prison during a six-week speaking tour of the U.S. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FS-Kan-3E-64-NBM)
