- Catholic college gets Incan crucifixes.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30785 CATHOLIC COLLEGE GETS INCAN CRUCIFIXES ALBANY, N.Y. -- This striking Crucifix is one of 16, made of silver and bronze by the Inca Indians of Peru some 300 years ago, which were presented to a Catholic college of Albany, N.Y. The valuable and unusual collection was given to the school by a Presbyterian layman, Elmer C. Schacht of Troy, N.Y. In the Crucifix shown in photo, Christ wears the headdress of an Incan chief with the symbols of the Incan sun around His head. Some of the crosses in the collection illustrate the fact that the Indians, in becoming Christians, retained some of their pagan traditions.
