Sheil (right), founder and national director of the CYO, presents the third annual Pope Leo XIII medal to G. Howland Shaw, former assistant Secretary of State, for his work in the social field. Shaw is a member of the board of visitors of the parole committee for the National Training School for Boys, Washington, D.C., and vice-president of the National Conference of Juvenile Agencies. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30341 YOUNG SCIENTISTS AT PRAYER CHICAGO -- At Chicago, young science students bow their heads in prayer at a session of the National Youth Conference on the Atom. A survey taken at the conference shows that most of the students are devoutly religious and give promise of being church leaders as well as future scientists. Some 80 per cent of the 350 students at the conference attend church regularly and many are leaders of their local church youth groups. The three-day meeting was sponsored by the nation’s major electric utility companies in cooperation with the National Science Teachers Association and the Future Scientists of America. The program was designed to teach students how to become personally involved in the application of the Gospels to their school and community. At top left, Sister Mary St. Mark, B.V.M., and students enjoy an Agape meal of thanksgiving after Mass. At top right, John Lehocky, a high school student, reads the Epistle in English in a “Mass of participation.” Below, a central table holds some of the food gifts which each participant brought for the Agape. At the Offertory, several students in procession carried food to this table placed in front of the altar. During the Mass, the student congregation joined in singing hymns based on Negro spirituals.
