- Youths discuss ecumenical movement.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-29682 YOUTHS DISCUSS ECUMENICAL MOVEMENT LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Some 1,530 delegates at the First North American Reformed and Presbyterian Youth Assembly spent much of their time discussing the role of church youth in the ecumenical movement. Held at the Perdue University campus in Lafayette, Ind., the assembly saw the high school students and young adults gather in “core groups” of from 12 to 15 members each to consider the question: “What is God calling us to be and do as youth of the Reformed Churches within the ecumenical movement.” Delegates, who represented eight denominations from this country and Canada, included youths from Presbyterian bodies abroad and students studying in the U.S. under the International Christian Youth Exchange program. Four of the exchange students are shown between sessions on the Perdue campus. Left to right: Astrid Rehrmann of Dillenburg, West Germany; Lars Berggrund of Uppsala, Sweden; Liisa Hollmen of Helsinki, Finland; and Joncker Biandudi, Jr., of Leopoldville, the Congo. Also present at the assembly as observers were three Roman Catholic students at Purdue. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RNS-7E-63-NAB)

- California youngsters aid Phoenix church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30841 CALIFORNIA YOUNGSTERS AID PHOENIX CHURCH PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Primera Iglesia Methodist Mexican church at Phoenix, Ariz., got a “new look”, thanks to the energy of 30 teenagers from North Ridge, Calif. The young people answered a call from the Rev. William Howard of the North Ridge Methodist church to use their Easter vacation by taking a bus-trip to the Phoenix church, which was badly in need of paint and other repairs. The young people raised money for the journey through spaghetti dinners and other fund-raising activities and spent a week in Phoenix not only renovating the Primera Iglesia church but, according to Mr. Howard, gaining experience in Christian fellowship and understanding. The California clergyman (at far right, upper left photo) directs paint-mixing chores, with Harold Gifford (standing, left), Methodist Youth Fellowship councilor from California, and the Rev. Mardoquero B. Garcia (standing, center), pastor of the Phoenix church. The visiting workers swarm all over the church, in bottom photo, and take a break from their labor, at upper right. - Title
