- Pope's palace at Avignon reopened.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: POPE’S PALACE AT AVIGNON REOPENED #S-1578 The Pope’s Palace at Avignon, France, shown here, has been opened again as a church for the first time since it was confiscated during the French Revolution 150 years ago. The local bishop, Msgr. Liobet, received a message of congratulation from Pope Pius XII when he finally succeeded in bringing about annulment of a law forbidding Mass to be celebrated in the palace. During the 14th century, when the Pope was exiled from Rome, seven legitimate Popes governed the Church from Avignon. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JK-NY-TFD-1-6-C-D)
