- Ancient church in Costa Rica.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ANCIENT CHURCH IN COSTA RICA #1615 Costa Rica, whose population is almost entirely Roman Catholic, has many imposing churches, among which is the cathedral of the City of Alajuela, shown here. The cathedral is one of the oldest in the country. The Papal Nuncio to Costa Rica, Msgr. Luigi Centoz, was appointed at the beginning of the war, but because of wartime travel restrictions has only recently been able to assume his post there. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCH OF THE GENERALS #3517 BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Historic St. John’s Protestant Episcopal church here, founded in 1834, is known as the “Church of the Generals” because of the famous military men who have worshipped here while stationed at nearby Fort Hamilton. Gen. Robert E. Lee, commander-in-chief of the Confederate Armies, was a vestryman from 1942-44 when he was assigned to Hamilton as a major. On April 29, 1849, Gen. Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson was baptized there by the Rev. M. Schofield, second rector of the church. Jackson also was a major at the time. The present rector is the Rev. Louis S. Luisa. - Religious structures offer new, free architectural expression.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30481 RELIGIOUS STRUCTURES OFFER NEW, FREE ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION As modern architecture has surged into new areas of expression, houses of worship have provided the profession one of its most dramatic outlets. The president of the American Institute of Architects, Geoffrey N. Lawford, says architects “are finding increased encouragement in translating traditional building symbols and forms into meaningful contemporary terms” through religious structures. The New York Chapter of the AIA in January held a major exhibit on “Churches and Temples: Postwar Architecture” at a NYC gallery. Among the 21 religious structures featured were: (upper left) the “23 de Ener” (23rd of January) Roman Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela, which utilizes a swooping design; the Lansing (Ill.) Presbyterian church (upper right), with sharp lines emphasizing man’s direct relationship to God; St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Oklahoma City, Okla., (lower left) an example of paraboloid, geometric design, and (lower right), a structure called the “Roofless Church,” a memorial to the Rappites, a utopian religious community which was founded in New Harmony, Ind., some 150 years ago.
