- Ancient church in Costa Rica.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ANCIENT CHURCH IN COSTA RICA #1615 Costa Rica, whose population is almost entirely Roman Catholic, has many imposing churches, among which is the cathedral of the City of Alajuela, shown here. The cathedral is one of the oldest in the country. The Papal Nuncio to Costa Rica, Msgr. Luigi Centoz, was appointed at the beginning of the war, but because of wartime travel restrictions has only recently been able to assume his post there. - Religious structures offer new, free architectural expression.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30481 RELIGIOUS STRUCTURES OFFER NEW, FREE ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION As modern architecture has surged into new areas of expression, houses of worship have provided the profession one of its most dramatic outlets. The president of the American Institute of Architects, Geoffrey N. Lawford, says architects “are finding increased encouragement in translating traditional building symbols and forms into meaningful contemporary terms” through religious structures. The New York Chapter of the AIA in January held a major exhibit on “Churches and Temples: Postwar Architecture” at a NYC gallery. Among the 21 religious structures featured were: (upper left) the “23 de Ener” (23rd of January) Roman Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela, which utilizes a swooping design; the Lansing (Ill.) Presbyterian church (upper right), with sharp lines emphasizing man’s direct relationship to God; St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Oklahoma City, Okla., (lower left) an example of paraboloid, geometric design, and (lower right), a structure called the “Roofless Church,” a memorial to the Rappites, a utopian religious community which was founded in New Harmony, Ind., some 150 years ago. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30300 BAPTISTRY TO HOUSE CALVARY ROCK BILOXI, Miss. -- The new $440,000 St. Michael’s church under construction in Biloxi, Miss., follows a trend of placing renewed emphasis on the baptistry. At left, laborers work on the church’s baptistry, a separate building similar in shape to the baptistry. At right Father H.J. Mullin, pastor of St. Michael’s, looks on as the five-and-a-half-ton chunk of Mount Calvary is uncovered by Dr. W.S. Sekul (left) and Steve Marinovich. The two men had been instrumental in getting the rock from Israel to the U.S. The rock will be trimmed a little and a basin carved in the top. Otherwise, it will be left as it is. The Burlington, Mass., church was dedicated by Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. It is named in honor of St. Malachy, 12th Century Primate of Armagh, Ireland. The building’s unusual features include a cone-shaped baptistry near the main entrance and a three-prong fork-like steeple. A glass partition divides the interior at its mid-section to separate the main church from a smaller chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CB-BOS-11A-64-NAB)

- Annual Mass at 'smallest' church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46003 ANNUAL MASS AT ‘SMALLEST’ CHURCH BAYOU GOULA, La. -- Worshippers gather outside the Chapel of the Madonna, which is probably the smallest church in the world, for Mass on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the only time during the year in which the church is used. The tiny nine-by-nine foot structure, located in Bayou Goula, a community 24 miles from Louisiana’s state capital at Baton Rouge, is so small that in addition to its altar, only a priest and an altar boy can fit inside. The approximately 200 worshippers who annually attend the Mass on the Feast of the Assumption must assemble on the front lawn of the tiny chapel and the altar must be moved outside. The chapel, which has been featured in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not,” was built in 1903 by Anthony Gullo, a poor immigrant Italian sugarcane famer. When Gullo’s son was gravely ill he promised to erect, as far as he was able, a chapel to the Madonna if she interceded for the youth. The boy did recover and Gullo kept his promise with the help of friends who assisted in building the tiny building amid sugarcane fields near the Mississippi River. By 1932, the original building had deteriorated and was replaced by the present one of the same size. Today it remains a simple, well-kept frame building with only a small cross and an arched doorway to distinguish it as a church. However, the more elaborate interior has paintings of saints and an alcove holding a glass-enclosed replica of Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna.” Years ago people seeking favors gave valuable jewelry when their prayers were answered, but this custom has long since ended. However, today about 70 jeweled pieces still adorn the blue sash annually placed on the chapel’s statue of the Madonna for the feast day Mass. - "Borda gives to God."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ‘BORDA GIVES TO GOD’ #C-1347 TASCO, Mexico [sic] -- Few churches in the world have been founded under more unusual circumstances than this magnificent edifice here which was completed in 1757. The man who built it was a French miner, Joseph le Borde, called by the Mexicans Jose de la Borda. The story is that one day la Borda, downcast over a streak of bad luck, was on his way to Mexico City when his mule’s hoof sank into the ground and stuck there. Borda dismounted and examined the ground. There he discovered evidence of a vein of silver, from which he was to amass a huge fortune. The incident restored his faith and he decided to erect a church dedicated to San Sebastian and Santa Prisca; hence the Mexican saying, “God gives to Borda, Borda gives to God.” The mines discovered by Borda still produce vast quantities of silver. Tasco itself has been declared a national monument by the Mexican Government and building construction is not permitted unless approved by the national art commission.
