- New Spanish church stresses simplicity.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31816 NEW SPANISH CHURCH STRESSES SIMPLICITY VITORIA, Spain -- A plain curving wall and gently pitched roof are marks of simplicity reflected in the interior of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Coronation of Our Lady at Vitoria, Spain. The solid structure, of local stone exterior and white concrete-walled interior, has a low block altar dominated by a dramatic, modernistic crucifix hanging on slender wires. With its bell-tower, which rises on four slim concrete columns, the church stands in sharp contrast to more conventional surrounding structures. The church is one of several featured in the new Holt, Rinehart and Winston volume, “New Churches of Europe,” by G.E. Kidder Smith, architectural historian and photographer. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30830 PIETA LEAVES VATICAN FOR FAIR VATICAN CITY -- Securely anchored to an open truck, Michelangelo’s priceless sculpture, Pieta, leaves St. Peter’s Basilica (background) for Naples on the first leg of its trip to the New York World’s Fair. In Naples the crate, weighing a total of about six tons, was to be fastened to the deck of the Cristoforo Colombo for its ocean voyage. Insured for $6,000,000, the statue of the Virgin and the Crucified Christ, was packed with asbestos and plastic materials in a wooden crate. The inner box was then placed in an outer steel case. It was addressed to Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, president of the Vatican Pavilion where the famous work of art will be viewed by millions. The trip marks the first time the statue left its permanent place in St. Peter’s in more than 450 years. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-4B-64-NAB)

This church was vandalized for 8 days following the occupation of Berlin. Most of the tombs of former German emperors and princes desecrated. At the right can be seen the towering St. Mary’s Church, one of the oldest sanctuaries in Brandenburg Provinces, and one of the mostly lightly [sic] damaged of the Berlin churches. Provost Heinrich Grueber, who is Protestant Counsellor in the Berlin City Government, is pastor of St. Mary’s. Domprediger Dr. ____Doehring standing amid the ruins of the Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral. Dr. Doehring, who is still active in German church affairs, was the Kaisers’ pastor before World War I. During the Nazi regime he resisted efforts of the Hitlerites to “Nazify” the Christian Church. Services of the Dom parish are now held in a hall, as are most of church services in Berlin.

- Title
- Reopened as German Catholic school.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: REOPENED AS GERMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL #C-4870 BERLIN -- Famed Ettal Cloister, a magnificent Catholic monastery high in the Bavarian mountains founded in 1330 by Emperor Ludvig, has been reopened as a school to train teachers as part of the long range de-Nazification policy now in effect in Germany. Since 1905 the monastery fathers have devoted most of their time to the education of young boys but their work was interrupted when the Hitler SS confiscated the building and grounds at the outbreak of the war.
