- Baptistry to house Calvary Rock.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30300 BAPTISTRY TO HOUSE CALVARY ROCK BILOXI, Miss. -- The new $440,000 St. Michael’s church under construction in Biloxi, Miss., follows a trend of placing renewed emphasis on the baptistry. At left, laborers work on the church’s baptistry, a separate building similar in shape to the baptistry. At right Father H.J. Mullin, pastor of St. Michael’s, looks on as the five-and-a-half-ton chunk of Mount Calvary is uncovered by Dr. W.S. Sekul (left) and Steve Marinovich. The two men had been instrumental in getting the rock from Israel to the U.S. The rock will be trimmed a little and a basin carved in the top. Otherwise, it will be left as it is. - Church razed in Switzerland.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29838 CHURCH RAZED IN SWITZERLAND USTER, Switzerland -- The last moment of an old church is recorded at Uster, Switzerland. The high spire of the Catholic church comes tumbling down following a blast set off by a demolition team. A new, larger church will replace the old structure. Although Swiss police roped off the area prior to the blast, the explosion injured people more than 300 feet away with flying debris. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-9A-63-W)

- Poland's most famous shrine.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29835 POLAND’S MOST FAMOUS SHRINE CZESTOCHOWA, Poland -- This is the ancient monastery-church of the Pauline Fathers on Jasna Gora (Bright Mountain), which houses the famous shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, patroness of Poland. Scene of annual national pilgrimages which have brought together more than one million faithful at one time, the shrine contains a picture of the Mother of Christ which legend says was painted on cypress wood by St. Luke. Because the wood is now dark with age, the image is often called the “Black Madonna.” This photograph at Czestochowa was taken during a recent visit by Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, Primate of Poland who charged the Communist authorities with persistent efforts to deny or restrict the religious freedom of Polish Catholics. The prelate challenged the Reds to match their praise of Pope John XXIII’s encyclical, Pacem in Terris, with proper respect for basic human rights. - First service in Air Force Protestant chapel.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-29924 FIRST SERVICE IN AIR FORCE PROTESTANT CHAPEL COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Cadet ushers begin to seat worshippers at the first service held in the gleaming Protestant nave as dedication ceremonies were held for the $3.4 million U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel near Colorado Springs. Seating 900 persons, with space for 100 more in the choir, the Protestant section is located on the upper level of the chapel with its 17 spires forming the nave’s vaulted ceiling. Stained glass between the roof’s panels suffuse the room with multi-colored light. Behind the altar is a curved 14-foot wall covered with pastel shades of glass tessera. The top of the altar table is a 15-foot marble slab. The pulpit is circular, cut from solid blocks of marble. Official dedication of the chapel, which includes a Catholic and a Jewish section on the lower level, was held outdoors and attended by some 10,000 persons, among whom were religious, military, government and civic leaders.
