- Religious structures offer new, free architectural expression.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30481 RELIGIOUS STRUCTURES OFFER NEW, FREE ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION As modern architecture has surged into new areas of expression, houses of worship have provided the profession one of its most dramatic outlets. The president of the American Institute of Architects, Geoffrey N. Lawford, says architects “are finding increased encouragement in translating traditional building symbols and forms into meaningful contemporary terms” through religious structures. The New York Chapter of the AIA in January held a major exhibit on “Churches and Temples: Postwar Architecture” at a NYC gallery. Among the 21 religious structures featured were: (upper left) the “23 de Ener” (23rd of January) Roman Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela, which utilizes a swooping design; the Lansing (Ill.) Presbyterian church (upper right), with sharp lines emphasizing man’s direct relationship to God; St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Oklahoma City, Okla., (lower left) an example of paraboloid, geometric design, and (lower right), a structure called the “Roofless Church,” a memorial to the Rappites, a utopian religious community which was founded in New Harmony, Ind., some 150 years ago. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30300 BAPTISTRY TO HOUSE CALVARY ROCK BILOXI, Miss. -- The new $440,000 St. Michael’s church under construction in Biloxi, Miss., follows a trend of placing renewed emphasis on the baptistry. At left, laborers work on the church’s baptistry, a separate building similar in shape to the baptistry. At right Father H.J. Mullin, pastor of St. Michael’s, looks on as the five-and-a-half-ton chunk of Mount Calvary is uncovered by Dr. W.S. Sekul (left) and Steve Marinovich. The two men had been instrumental in getting the rock from Israel to the U.S. The rock will be trimmed a little and a basin carved in the top. Otherwise, it will be left as it is. - New Spanish church stresses simplicity.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31816 NEW SPANISH CHURCH STRESSES SIMPLICITY VITORIA, Spain -- A plain curving wall and gently pitched roof are marks of simplicity reflected in the interior of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Coronation of Our Lady at Vitoria, Spain. The solid structure, of local stone exterior and white concrete-walled interior, has a low block altar dominated by a dramatic, modernistic crucifix hanging on slender wires. With its bell-tower, which rises on four slim concrete columns, the church stands in sharp contrast to more conventional surrounding structures. The church is one of several featured in the new Holt, Rinehart and Winston volume, “New Churches of Europe,” by G.E. Kidder Smith, architectural historian and photographer. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OUR LADY OF MERCY IN LIMA #C-1345 LIMA, Peru -- The church of Our Lady of Mercy -- “Nuestra Senora de la Merced” -- is one of Peru’s oldest religious edifices. Its tower, belfry and facade were recently restored in their original style by the Peruvian government. The monks who built it, scions of Spanish aristocracy, are believed to have erected a hermitage in the Rimac Valley even before the founding of Lima, and they figured prominently in the city’s early history. In the cloistered garden of Our Lady is a fig tree which was planted more than 400 years ago by Friar Francisco Bobadella, one of the founders. Our Lady of Mercy is the patron saint of the Peruvian Army. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HHS-TOR-CAN-MES-5D-6-C)

The high spire of the Catholic church comes tumbling down following a blast set off by a demolition team. A new, larger church will replace the old structure. Although Swiss police roped off the area prior to the blast, the explosion injured people more than 300 feet away with flying debris. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-9A-63-W)

- Rome's great basilicas.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45714 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (Fifth of a Series) ROME -- The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome and, despite the architectural splendor of St. Peter’s, it is first in rank of all Rome’s churches. The present church, dating from the 16th Century, is the fourth actual structure, the others having been destroyed by fire and earthquake. Among the architects who worked on it were Domenico Fontana, who also erected the obelisk in front of St. Peter’s, and Francesco Borromini. The facade, which is shown here, was executed in the 18th Century by Alessandro Galilei. Near the basilica is the Lateran Palace, rebuilt on the site of an earlier palace which had served as the papal residence until the 14th Century. It is now a museum of Christian antiquities. The older palace was the scene of the five Lateran Councils, and the new one of the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-7C-74-DS)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31796 MODERN DESIGN BURLINGTON, Mass. -- The newly dedicated ultra-modern St. Malachy’s church -- which some say looks like a caterpillar -- draws parishioners and sight-seers. The Burlington, Mass., church was dedicated by Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. It is named in honor of St. Malachy, 12th Century Primate of Armagh, Ireland. The building’s unusual features include a cone-shaped baptistry near the main entrance and a three-prong fork-like steeple. A glass partition divides the interior at its mid-section to separate the main church from a smaller chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CB-BOS-11A-64-NAB)
