- Oldest Arizona's Catholic mission.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST ARIZONA’S CATHOLIC MISSION #1632 TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Xavier del Bac Mission for Papago Indian eleven miles southwest of Tucson, is striking in its symmetry and shows vestiges of the once-brilliant decoration of its interior. The mission was originally built in 1692 by the famous Spanish “Padre on Horseback,” Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a Jesuit. In the latter part of the 18th century it passed into the hands of the Franciscan Fathers, who still tend to the needs of the Indian population. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #22 HISTORIC AMERICAN CHURCHES MONTEREY, Calif. -- San Carlos Borromeo, above, is known as the Father of the Missions and holds the greatest historical interest of all the missions founded by Padre Junipero Serra, the Apostle of California. It is here that Padre Junipero is buried. The walls of this old church are five feet thick and curve inward gradually to meet the ceiling. The parabolic arch thus formed makes San Carlos probably the only building of its kind. (One of a Series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AdD-d-7-JOG-R)

- Childhood church re-created.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #C-4301 CHILDHOOD CHURCH RE-CREATED NEW YORK -- Built from memory is this replica of the church Dominic Zazzera attended in Pieve, Italy before coming to this country as a teen-age-youth. Zazzera, who is chef in a restaurant here, took special pride in the model, for his grandfather designed the original church. Complete with lights, pews, altars and carpeting for the center aisle, the church is a masterpiece of detail. A small victrola sounds the Ave Maria and bells from the chime tower. Model cost $4,000 to build. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (3L-NY-MES-8C-6-C)

Since 1905 the monastery fathers have devoted most of their time to the education of young boys but their work was interrupted when the Hitler SS confiscated the building and grounds at the outbreak of the war. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: MISSION TO THE NAVAJOS #4803 BLUFF, Utah -- In these primitive clay-baked huts built at the base of a barren desert mountain the Protestant Episcopal Church maintains a unique mission for Navajos. It is named for St. Christopher, includes the only school for Indians in an area of 1500 square miles. The Rev. H.B. Leibler and a small staff, aided by the Navajos themselves, furnished the mission buildings. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (GWT-ALB-NM-BS-11B-6-A-E)

- Rome's great basilicas.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45710 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (First of a Series) ROME -- There are three other major basilicas in the Eternal City -- St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul’s-Outside-the-Walls -- but the first stop for most of those making the pilgrimage to Rome during the upcoming Holy Yar will be St. Peter’s Basilia in the Vatican. St. Peter’s can only be described in superlatives. It is the largest church in the Christian world, and has perhaps the most commanding dome of any building. It is able to accommodate 50,000 people and it’s architects included some of the greatest artists the world has ever produced. The present structure was begun in 1506 under Bramante to replace a basilica erected by the Emperor Constantine on the supposed site of St. Peter’s crucifixion. Bramante designed a church in the shape of a Greek cross but after his death in 1514 a succession of architects, including Rafael, Fra Giacondo and Fiuliano da San Gallo, made drastic changes. In 1546, Michelangelo was called in as chief architect and restored Bramante’s Greek-cross plan. He also designed an enormous dome over the crossing that would dominate the building. His conception may be best judged from the apse of the basilica (the view here), since the front of the building was later considerable changed. After Michelangelo’s death in 1564, the dome was carried out in slightly modified form by Giacomo della Porta. Under Pope Sixtus V, the nave of the building was lengthened to accommodate a vast congregation, in effect destroying the planned domination of the dome from the front of the church. The basilica itself was completed in 1614 although work continued in and around it for decades. The most impressive later additions are Bernini’s magnificent colonnades which extend forward from the sides of the basilica and end in semi-circles enclosing St. Peter’s Square. The great obelisk of Heliopolis, brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula, adorns the center of the Square. The dimensions of St. Peter’s are impressive, as they should be for the largest church in Christendom. The dome rises to a height of 450 feet from the ground and the basilica is 619 feet long. - Text transcribed from caption: C-45713 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (Fourth of a Series) ROME -- Inside the Basilica of St. Paul’s-Outside-the-Walls, Corinthian columns support a procession of arches moving toward the apse. In contrast to the relatively simple exterior, the interior displays iridescent and striking mosaic decoration -- adapted from the Romans -- along the nave walls, on the “triumphal arch” leading into the apse, and on the apse itself. These mosaics are remnants saved from the fire which destroyed the old basilica and range in age from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-7B-74-DS)
