- Church of the generals.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCH OF THE GENERALS #3517 BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Historic St. John’s Protestant Episcopal church here, founded in 1834, is known as the “Church of the Generals” because of the famous military men who have worshipped here while stationed at nearby Fort Hamilton. Gen. Robert E. Lee, commander-in-chief of the Confederate Armies, was a vestryman from 1942-44 when he was assigned to Hamilton as a major. On April 29, 1849, Gen. Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson was baptized there by the Rev. M. Schofield, second rector of the church. Jackson also was a major at the time. The present rector is the Rev. Louis S. Luisa.
